Edsel Ford was Henry's only son and died young.
The car was named for him posthumously.
He was the book-keeping brainiac half behind FoMoCo's early success; Henry was the mechanical expert, assisted greatly by one henry Leland.
Edsel is also a major player in another part of Ford and American automotive history. In the late 30s, he had a Lincoln Zephyr coupe' customized with a spare tire mounted on the rear bumper. It looked so good it was decided to put the design into actual production as a full-on Lincoln. The final model was named after the practice of placing the spare tire on the trunk or rear bumper: Continental.
