Yup, I do like ma' beer.
It occurs to me that I've written many times on these pages about
the joys of tilting one back.
It's true, I love to have a drink with friends, get a little loud and loose,
and forget the worries of the day.
Now I want to offer some balance and background.
I don't advocate alcohol abuse. If you're not a drinker, don't start.
If you do drink, please do so in moderation.
If you're underage, please wait until your time comes before beating
up your poor liver.
If you have only one hard and fast rule to live by, please let it be this:
Don't drink and drive.
Period. Ever.
Imagine how you would feel if you injured or killed someone as a result
of your negligence. It would make this wonderful life very hard to live.
There is no excuse for putting others in danger just because you are
too lazy to call a taxi or have a friend drive you home.
The first time I fursuited was Halloween of 2009. I didn't plan things
well. I can make all the excuses in the world about being dehydrated
and not eating anything but the truth is I just plain drank too much.
Being a typical man, I can never admit when I'm wrong, so I told
my friends that I was fine to drive and turned down their offers for
a ride home. I stumbled to the car and got behind the wheel.
I sat for several minutes, thinking about the amazing time I had
and the fandom that I had just discovered that held so much promise.
Then I thought about getting pulled over, or getting in an accident,
or doing something worse.
Goodbye fursuiting. Goodbye furry. I doubt that I could have continued
in the fandom with the association of such a stupid
and terrible experience.
I pulled my head out of my butt and got a hotel room.
Good choice. I spent 37 bucks on a Motel 6 and slunk home in the early
morning. I didn't go to jail. I didn't take anyone's life.
Thank you, furry fandom.
Go out tonight and party with your friends. Make sure that one of you
is the designated driver. The DD gets free sodas and juice, gets their
dinner paid for, gets to pick the bar and gets to decide when it's
time to go home. The DD is king (or queen) because you owe them
your life.
Call a taxi. Get a hotel room. Sleep in the park for a few hours. Walk
to a cofffee shop and eat pancakes. Sleep on your friend's couch.
Do whatver it takes.
Plan ahead.
If you drink, you cannot drive.
Thank you for reading. Thanks for taking this to heart.
Now, let's go get a cold one. My furtografur will drive.

What sucks is I look around at all my buddies from school who have to drink and get high at 'parties' to have a good time, and that's how they get their kicks. I try to responsibly party. The farthest I'll go is GASP! drink caffeine after 3 PM.
But don't worry, I'll heed your advice, Mr. Dogbomb.
But don't worry, I'll heed your advice, Mr. Dogbomb.
I second that! I myself am a severe worrywart when my friends or roommates go to have fun at a party. Most of the time, I can't go because I've got loads of work and I'm not much of a social butterfly, but whenever my friends go out, they know to call me if they are drunk. If I'm there, I confiscate the keys, but if I can't get over there, I'll get the address of where they went to drink and send a cab.
It'd kill me if anything happened to my friends while they were soused.
It'd kill me if anything happened to my friends while they were soused.
WTG DOGBOMB! I have seen and heard far to many stories of friends insisting they were fine, and nothing but bad things happening :c A friend of my friends has been in 6.. >6< drink and drive accidents... her being the driver, now please explain to me, how you have been in SIX?!?! one of them costing half your hand?! and you STILL drank and drove after that?!?!... (she reached out to balance herself while the car was doing the "barrel roll" and didn't realize her window was already gone, her hand hit a telephone pole and did what they call "a degloving" or however its spelled, she lost her middle finger.) These sorts of things, make me cry for friends not to do something so immature... <3 if you drink, you don't drive, end of story! -_- AND FRIENDS, do NOT leave your friends ALONE after drinking, my brothers friends ditched him on their way home, walking which was smart, but my brother was heavily drunk and passed out on some random persons porch, because he just needed to sit down a second... he ended up in jail for simply wanting to sit down.. YES it would be scary being the people that lived there, but he is a REALLY REALLY great guy and didn't deserve to be tossed aside by "friends" anyway I could go on and on but I won't lol JUST DON'T DO IT LIKE DOGBOMB SAID >:C
This reminds me that the night I took this picture: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4607651 one of our designated drivers ended up getting more drunk than ANYONE else, and so someone that probably shouldn't have been driving ended up having to drive that vehicle instead. Though, I don't mean "shouldn't have been driving" as in "he couldn't see straight", I just mean that he most likely would have gone to jail if he had been pulled over. He did fine though, and I made sure I drove behind him the whole way home so I could keep an eye on him.
Still, yeah, that designated-driver got an ear-full the next day. :x Fortunately I hang out with a pretty responsible group of guys that seem to at least keep a grasp on what their limits are, even while drunk.
Also, looking forward to that beer with you at FWA!

Are you actually an angel sent from Heaven that couldn't find a good way to hide it's halo and wings beside covering them up in a fursuit? Cause if not, you are an example to humans furrys and anything else that's considerably living or not of someone who is truly selfless and compassionate to others.
You, sir, are awesome.
I personally don't drink (though I'm underage anyway) even though I've had the opportunity to many times. I've been to a decent amount of parties, and I've seen people do plenty of stupid things, to the point where I'm not sure if I ever want to start drinking...
That and my mom's a probation officer, so I've heard my fair share of stories too.

Yeah my mom's gotten a DUI before. It's not a pleasant experience waiting up all night and day for your mother just to find out she went to jail.
Anyway, my hubby was telling me a story the other day to full on ran into someone that was pulled over on the side of the freeway. Killed the innocent guy instantly. It's pretty ridiculous considering how apparently the army will pay for your cab fare..

Wow, that made no sense, I mean another soldier decided to drink and drive and ran into a guy that was broke down on the shoulder of the highway. They have no reason to drink and drive, they'll pay for your cab fare. It's gotten so bad that they're considering making the drinking age on post 18 so that maybe soldiers will STAY PUT instead of going off and doing stupid stuff.
Very well said, sir. ^^ I'm usually the designated driver when I go out, because I just don't have a will to get drunk. I figure I can have more fun if i'm sober. What's the point of going out with friends and getting super drunk if you end up not remembering it the next day :P hehehe
Thank you for sharing that with us. ^^ The message is well said and is taken to heart.

*HUGE HUGS* Thank you. I gush way too much when it comes to you, but by god you deserve it. Look at what you have. everyone on FA watches you, adores you, honours you. And what do you do with that popularity, the "fame"?
You use it to educate others. To make a difference. To make people SEE.

I have been known to have 1 or 4 too many in my lifetime. I prefer to drink at home or at least close to home so i can walk home. last night though I was way accross town. I was planning on driving home all night, but I just kept drinking mah beers and having fun so I crashed on my friends couch, and the cat slept on me :D but I drove home this morning and didnt get arrested cause I slept it off there instead!
Awesome words Dogbomb! Wish lot of my friends can understand a so easy concept
drink=no drive
no drive=drink
but unfortunately they don't want to understand, how many times I drove back home with someone drunk,or how many times I was the driver for those who no longer have the license!
One evening for example i was out with some friends and then they randomly wanted to go in a pub, quite far away from our city.
One of them has offered for drive but he already drunk a beer and he usually drive like a crazy pilot,so i stole his car keys and drove all the evening till past midnight.
I can't force people to do something or to understand something if they don't want to do or they don't to understand, but when i'm with them i prefer to drive, for my life,my mate and for them. I hope they understand in time what is important to do,live or drink.
I drink as well, but not when i have to drive,i got drunk only one time,at the party for my 18th birthday, after that night i never got drunk again, even my soul was in pain that night from how much i was drunk.
And now i have my beloved mate,i can't do such stupid thing,i can't make him suffer if i do something wrong,he have changed my life,i don't go fast anymore with my car,i'm stopping smoking,i pay more attention in what i do,while driving or working.
I can say i have lot of reasons for live, for not being injured,i understood it,lot of people i know haven't yet but is hard to make them understand sometimes

If my friends around me ever head to the bar to drink, I will probably always be the designated driver. I don't want to drink, I don't really like the taste of any alcohol products x.x I don't want to feel drunk or have to suffer through the mind numbing throbbing of the hangover that follows. Your words of wisdom are taken to heart my friend. Thank you for being such a wonderful addition to this fandom
Good to hear you made the right decision then. I don't drink often myself. If I do I wait a good long time before I go near my car and I refuse to go near it until I'm good and ready. I'm usualy the designated driver for any friends I happen to go with myself. Done it a few times.
Those are some VERY GOOD WORDS OF ADVICE!....
I can remember driving home 25 plus years ago just hammered and wonder how I got there! Then I wised up and got smart! I still enjoy a beer but I don't drink and drive! If I feel like I have a buzz at all I grab the blanket behind the seat and take a nap in the cab.

I don't drink. Ever. You already know this DB, but the reasons go much deeper than i simply don't drink. My parents were both alcoholics, and when I was younger, I remember my mom and dad getting into shouting matches. The cops would be called to our house, because our windows were always open because our home didn't have A/C and so the neighbors across the street and a house away could hear everything. My dad was also abusive drunk.
I don't drink because at times, my mom would get drunk for no reason, and sit on our back patio and cry, and I'd comfort her because I felt bad for some reason. Then I got older, and one day stopped comforting her. She went to hug me, and I just said no to her and walked away.
I don't drink because I've never seen the point, and because of a family history, I don't like the idea of liking beer and such and heading down the wrong path. I don't trust my self control that much.
I've thought about having like a hard lemonade or something, and I've even had a glass of champagne at my sister's wedding reception, but other than that I will never take up casual or social drinking...
So, I will always be the "Designated Wuffle", and I'll happily cart inebriated friends around if it means they don't become stupid and drive.
Now I just have to find some friends. :>

Yeah, live and learn, and try not to be like my parents. Thats what i strive for... :/
well, lets just say next convention we're at, if you and Teh have a few too many drinks in the bar and I happen to be around, I'll gladly cart your butts back to the hotel. Tis' what a Designated Wuffle is for. ;)

:s Very wise and true, Dogbomb! It warms my heart to hear that there are sesnible beer-lovers out there, haha!
D: The only thing worse than drinking and driving is TEXTING and driving. Seriously, if a phone call or text is so important that it must be done there and then, PULL OVER and then pull out your phone. Nothing could be worse than running into another car while you're talking to your BFFL about something that will neveer be worth more than taking a life.

Well we could set something up like that! My mates uncle is an Irvine PD and I'm sure they would go for something like that. A few of us in suits doing that would really grab peoples attention. something like pounding a few drinks back at a bar, jumping in a car and doing a DUI stop and all that for this coming holiday season would really be cool.
Absolutely solid advice! The consequences of our actions can have life-shattering repercussions, so planning ahead when going out for a good time is vitally important! Dogbomb, if one person takes this journal to heart, then you have done an amazing thing. Ideally, I wish everyone would consider the dangers of drinking and driving. Thank you for posting such an important message. :3
It's nice to see people in this fandom who don't feel the need to party 'till they drop and think about how to get home afterword. I am seriously the biggest douche when it comes to drinking and driving. My friends learn quickly that if they have ONE drink, or a half a drink, or consume any alcohol at all, they are then forbidden from operating a motor vehicle for at least six hours. When people try to tell me that's overkill, I usually just respond with the simple fact that most people tell me they feel just as fine to drive before they drink as after two beers, when they're either just getting buzzed or not really buzzed. This is crap, and due to their own warped self-perception, and therefore no one drives and drinks while the okapi is around. D8<
If people out there are having trouble finding DDs, just wave a $20 or two around your apartment or dorm or whatever. You would be amazed how many random strangers I have seen volunteer to DD for groups of people via a phonecall at the end of the night, just because they were offered some cash. Whether you pay a taxi or a person, it's really not that hard to find someone to keep you from ruining the rest of your life.

The number one killer of teens now a-days even without the alcohol consumption is motor vehicle accidents.
I read what you wrote and your words I hope do inspire many others
I am also glad you made the right choice that night and saved your life as well as others. Kudos

I'll tack in a few extra bits about DUI and wet and reckless and how it applies at least in California:
Upon having your insurance company file the SR-22 (The insurance company's agreement to continue to insure you), Your insurance company will charge a filing fee for this. Once the policy is up for renewal, the incident is counted as a major moving violation which will effectively remove good driving discounts as well as another rating factor most companies use to measure your length of time as a good
driver. These penalties can last for anywhere from 3 to 7 years. That's 3 to 7 years of paying 200% or more for insurance. This doesn't include court fees and impound fees paid by you.
Dogbomb's right, you don't want to risk this one at all.

ABSOLUTELY true. My company charges a fee for filing the SR-22, and lemme tell you, not only is it a major violation, short of vehicular homicide, there is not much more you can do to raise your premiums than have a DUI.
Don't forget...there is also NO RULE that says just because it's no longer on your MVR the insurance company HAS to reduce your rates. Contrary to popular belief, ONCE WE KNOW about a violation, IT STAYS there.

A very true and appropriate message, just in time for Halloween!
I like your suggestion of "things to do instead of drink and drive," as well as your principle of letting the DD be king (or queen)-- that's really how it ought to be! They are the ones who are "sacrificing" and saving lives, in turn.
I'd be your DD anyday, DB.

dude your a genuine good fur(pup) for doign that. seriously drunk drivign really scares me, and those who have had some drinks can never accept to sleeping it off or even spendign money on a motel room or cab and i am a college student so i have to deal with it alot and i hate every time i step in the car with someone whose had some drinks, and am dissapointed in myself whenever i do *sigh* so thank you for being a good person and doing the right thing *hugs you tight*
Amen to that. I drink, but I don't drink and drive. Or ride. Especially ride. The Tennessee state motorcycle manual says that in 40% of fatal crashes, the riders had some level of alcohol in their blood.
That said, I like craft brews, especially dark/black ales/lagers

After what I've seen of my father and both sides of my family getting smashed (both by alcohol and less...savory things), I decided not to ever touch the stuff, even before I turned 6 years old. Watching your mother's sister end up wheelchair-bound for the rest of her life, your father waste away from liver-failure, the abuse that your mother suffered under the hands of her drunken father, and worse things, it really makes you wonder why people would do this on purpose.
The fact that I'm an addictive personality and KNOW it helps to put things into perspective as well.
Feel free to indulge, just know your limites , and if you go beyond them, make sure you have a backup plan.
Go-go Dogbomb!

So many haters against the fandom
Mr. Dogbomb right here examplifies an extremely great role model figure though. Just goes to show that the fandom can be alot better then how alot of people see it. Hell, overall you're just a great person, Dogbomb, a rolemodel for this entire generation of people. x3
Keep up the awesome work!

I can't stand drunk drivers, at all... Last night, a hit and run happened on a street about a mile down the road, a 50-something year old woman was hit and killed by a drunk driver. I didn't see it happen, but my mom did, I couldn't imagine how awful it must've been. Most of my peers are into drinking now, I'll never understand why... It kills your liver, brain cells, and it just plain tastes nasty :S [But I'm more of a Mother Nature person, it's never killed anyone :P]
I'm personally not a drinker, too young in the first place (as if that stops anyone in my generation) but I genuinely just don't enjoy booze. Typically I'll offer myself up as DD when I can, and it really is a good feeling knowing that you're keeping people alive. Glad to see this journal Dogbomb, keep rocking it!
A close friend of mine told me about her dad's accident.
He was drunk, and driving, and he got into an accident and killed some little old lady.
And he just left the scene.
obviously he was caught and arrested, but it was just so sad to see my friend go through all that stress.
they had to go to court dozens of times, and she said "They treated him so mean! They acted like he didn't even have a family behind him, like he wasn't even a person."
So now her dad's in jail, her mom's unemployed, and... I don't really know what happened to her. We both moved around the same time and lost contact.
it was just so sad...
I hope I never get too drunk to KNOW I'm too drunk to drive home.

When it comes to drinking, I managed to drink too much in one night and got sick the same night... I've since decided never to do that again. I barely drink, but if I do, it's usually just one bottle of fruity crap and that's it. I've never had a hangover, unless you count that one night I guess?
I have too much anxiety to drive, anyway...

this is one of the reasons, why when i drink, i have one glass of long island iced tea and thats it. i cant get drunk or even buzzed off of alcohol, but still, i know that one drink for me leaves me safe to drive. the only times i've ever had more then one, my mate was with me and i made him drive (he doesnt drink).
btw, nice post. would love to see seom furry psa's on tv (other then smokey),

You, sir, are effing awesome- you listened to your conscience at a time when most people would have shrugged it off- if they'd ever heard it in the first place, that is.
Coming from a family of alcoholics, I've seen what booze does to a person's body and psyche. As result of knowing it was one of the drivers of the abuse that went on in my family for decades, that it killed both my uncle and his son and nearly ruined my mother's life and health, I refuse to drink much- I'm a virtual teetotaler. Hell, I rarely am anything but sober. Three or four drinks a year is usually enough for me, thanks. I think the closest I've gotten to drunk in the last several years was being greedy with the mead at my wedding! That stuff is hard for me to resist, it tastes so good. *chuckles* Drank a bottle all to my greedy-ass self, spaced out over six hours (Ok, I did share with my hubby,
kanis)...
I don't drive in any case, but I may, one day soon, but I'll NEVER do it drunk- I doubt I could live with myself if I were to get into an accident that harmed someone. O___o

That stuff is hard for me to resist, it tastes so good. *chuckles* Drank a bottle all to my greedy-ass self, spaced out over six hours (Ok, I did share with my hubby,
kanis)...I don't drive in any case, but I may, one day soon, but I'll NEVER do it drunk- I doubt I could live with myself if I were to get into an accident that harmed someone. O___o
This is probably the best PSA I hav ever seen thank you.My mother was coronor, and an ambulance driver and my father was a firefighter so I have heard countless stories of alchohol related deaths and accidents. My cousin was hospitalized twice for liver problems the second time he died. I haven`t drank alcohol yet and I don't plan to either.
During my formative years and beyond, i Was a volunteer fireman and got training as an Emergency medical tech. for the 12 years was with the department till I moved out west, I saw the horror, the sadness, the destruction of so many from driving drunk, and driving under the influence of other drugs.
I cant tell you the feelings i get thinking about one night when a few of us were bored and just hanging out at the firehall, when the town cop swings by outside, tweets his siren, and as we poke our heads out the window, yells theres a car accident on US 23 and hes on his way there now and saw the light on.
We gear up and hop on the trucks and head out. We dont get "toned" out (the pager system from dispatch to alert us to call sends out a select tone that activates the appropriate FD/Rescue members pager), till were arriving on scene.
We find a car, it has flipped and rolled and tumbled thru a sparse grove of trees from the highway and its resting on its roof on a side road from the main highway about 300 feet away. Headlights on, wipers going, and no driver or passengers.
We fan out thru the grove looking for anything, best we can do is try to spot something as its dark, and flashlights are not a lot, but better than nothing when searching.
I stumble upon the driver and thru whatever physics happened, he was ejected about halfway between the roadway and where his car now sits, and his upper body was twisted almost 180 degrees from his lower body around the hips. I yelled to the others and checked for a pulse.
He had one, but in the seconds I found it, I got two decent pulse hits, then three weak ones, and then, nothing.
I locked up at that point, 30 seconds went by and training told me I should start CPR, but he was destroyed beyond recovery, and I didnt... the rest of the crew arrived and asked me is there a pulse, and I said no.
Later I found out he was doped up on some kind of opiate. In a way, its tragic that a life had to end that horribly. I can concede the point he didnt take anyone else with him I guess.
But for me, its a ghost I have to live with. I turn it over and over in my head sometimes for not doing everything I should have to save him.
I expressed this to some others a long time back, and the concensus was I did what i could, and at least he did not die alone. I have to grasp that on its ragged ends and hang on, because I still feel bad about it in many ways.
What could I have done though?
I will never know that answer while im still alive I think, but I do know that that driving, and being under the influence of anything like drugs or alcohol is asking for trouble.
Sorry dogbomb, this brought up some old memories, and I had to vent somewhat.
Keep being awesome 8-)

Wow, thanks for that amazing comment.
I salute you for all that you do.
I hope you find some peace with this situation.
The driver of that vehicle made his choices and the
tragic result was not your fault. It sounds as if keeping
him alive may have been less humane than letting him loose
from that wrecked body.
That, of course, is another horrible part about drunk driving:
the emergency responders have to deal with the mess.
It's a bad situation all the way around and one that can be avoided.
Thanks again for the comment, my friend.

Not much of a social drinker and WHEN or IF I do choose to drink, whether it be with friends or just by myself, I usually have a drink with a low alcohol content, like a Shandy Carib which has 1.2% alcohol volume. I have the alcohol tolerance of a kitten so I can't handle more than two (2) Shandys and even that is debatable. It depends really on whether I've eaten before or AM eating when I'm drinking. But anyhoo, thanks for the sound advice. :3
And I gotta know DB, kinda off topic but HOW did the local law enforcement react when a giant, walking, talking dog asked to take a photo with their squad car? >.>

The local policeman would not pose with me for the picture;
something about department policy
I could imagine that if he DID take the photo, the guys down at the local precinct would never let him down for it, nor would they allow him to forget.
"Hey, remember that time you posed with a giant walking, talking dog?" XD
but he was friendly and accomidating if not a bit confused...
Gee, I couldn't imagine WHY he'd be a bit confused! XD
