I make a few references to my Lighting Summary.
What I was trying to say on step 1b is:
The color theory style of shading wants would have us use red to shade green. That produces the gray tone necessary to produce Value changes.
My problem is that this strategy was developed for painting and colorpencil doesn't blend as smoothly as paint does. In colorpencil, you're more likely to end up with red blotches.
Consequently, my trick is to shade green with a red-toned green instead of red itself. The result being that the red tone adds Value to the green without looking blotchy.
I might also push the values darker still with a red-toned brown.
Also, in total honesty, using more pressure on a colorpencil does change the value, but only because a light pressure still shows a lot of the white from the paper, and a heavy pressure shows more of the darker value of the color itself. Nevertheless, relying only on this is going to severely limit your range of value.
