The Diver
A Thursday Prompt poem

Prompt: jump
Standing on a bare plane,
Displaying otherworldly poise;
The crowd below him’s noise
Barely impinging on his brain.
Then –
The otter’s paws meet over his head,
As his feet begin to flex upon the board;
Everything else around him ignored,
His toes digging into the roughened tread.
Then –
Release! Tumbling, twisting into a fall,
Emulating the earthward flight of an arrow;
Drawing in and making himself narrow,
A lance streaking at a target, very small.
Then –
The arrow strikes amid a flurry of bubbles,
The otter’s body twisting, curving;
Lungs bursting, torso and limbs swerving,
The first full breath exhales all his troubles.
Then –
The otter on the stand.
Paws raised high in triumph.
