That can be explained. One of the reasons that it would seem "dark and depressing" in the photos you've seen is most likely the result of someones unprofessional photographic skills, the flash wasn't used, and/or the photo was taken at the dance(like this photo); and of course, they usually have the room pretty dark when they have a dance going on.
