Blood dripped from the white wolf's teeth as he panted. The golden unicorn stood lightly on the surface of the water, head low from the exertion of the fight.
"We will both fall if this battle continues," the unicorn said.
"Perhaps," the wolf gasped, "But my mate is sick, and will die without the benefit of your flesh. I must try."
The unicorn paced to the edge of the pool, where a twisted tree surged wide and low from the soil. Broad, wavy leaves fluttered in the fairy wind, its latticed branches heavy with heavy green fruit.
"Perhaps," the unicorn said, nudging the fruit, "There is another way. I have guarded this tree since the bones of the earth were young. Eat of its fruit, and your mate shall be healed."
The wolf snarled, "And what shall I lose, by choosing your alternative?"
The unicorn regarded the wolf with blood red eyes, "You were prepared to die a moment ago. Is there anything greater you wouldn't give to save her?"
The wolf had no reply. Slowly, he waded through the clear waters, ascended the mound. He reached up, and crushed his jaws around the fruit. A golden light suffused the wolf, blinding bright. For a moment, there was nothing but the hiss of the waterfall, the huff of the unicorn's breathing. And then, the light faded--and a new wolf emerged.
Golden, long of limb, red of eye, the wolf regarded his new shape in wonder.
"You are my kin now," the unicorn said, touching his muzzle to the wolf's nose, "Nevermore shall you or your mate require flesh. You will stay here, tend the tree and the blue corn of this valley--full of health and song."
"And you," the wolf said, shivering at the unaccustomed mane racing down his neck, "Shall become like me. You shall run with us, and protect our family to its final generation."
