Horse-mounted troops were some of the most effective in medieval warfare, with much greater damage potential due to the weight and speed of the horse, mounting was in no way limited to commanding officers. That's why in 80's and 90's action movies they reffered to a a refnforcement comprising well-armed troops as 'cavalry', derived from the french 'cavalerie' being a squad of horse-mounted troops with such great combat potential they could turn the tide of battle if employed correctly to clear strategic positions.
