Proving that I am alive, and have not given up being creative, here is a piano bench I designed and constructed for a certain tiger ;) This was done so that his piano had a bench to play on and was fun for me since I was able to get it into a furniture design show that's put on every two years here in Portland, OR.
As indicated by the title, the joint at the corner is what is known as a "twisted dovetail" and rather than either the top or sides slotting into the adjacent piece perpendicularly, the two pieces actually go together on a diagonal. This makes for a challenging joint to do well, but is a really beautiful and extraordinarily strong joint when done well.
The design as a whole was conceived as two separate parts; the wooden bench made up of three panels of consistent depth and thickness, and the leather upholstered seat cushion which creates a rectangular block wrapping around the top of the bench and fastening together underneath.
