I remember this ancient joke from my childhood:
(Kid): "Mom, is it true that we're dust before we're born?"
(Mom): "Yes, dear."
(Kid): "And is it true that we're dust after we're dead?"
(Mom): "Yes."
(Kid): "Then you'd better come quick! There's someone under my bed and he's either coming or going!"
This was beautiful, I always look forward to these outings to Scanectity's Valley, however brief they may be, and its interesting to see the skunk taking on a sort of psychopomp-like role here.
Moreover, I love the way death is treated in this story. Not something to be feared, but as a newfound peace.
