I dunno if this'd help you but, i usually start my icons at 500X500 pixels, so i can add details and stuff easily, then afterwards, shrink em down.

I do it at 300x300 and when I shrink it down, way too many details are lost, which is why this one is cropped. :(

Poo. X_X sorry to hear that. sometimes it's just the pose tbh, i've noticed if you make the lines a bit thicker it can help somewhat.
