Yes, it was widespread. It was originated by the Iranian nomads (Scythians, Sarmatians, Parthians etc), and then spread to the Dacians. Romans adopted it after the Dacian war. After the fall of the Western Rome, its usage was continued until 11th century in Western Europe.
