Expeditions to abandoned places can be a rewarding experience. It's amazing what people will leave behind.

now that you mention it, it probably is a good idea to bring masks and gloves for an exploration. you never know when you'll come across asbestos, or worn out and decaying developer/other film chemicals, radioactive mushroom spores, remnants of the "food" from an abandoned cafeteria, and such. This pic feels like my former school from my childhood is being explored by wolves several decades after the humans mysteriously disappeared. I love it.
I've done this before! Except it's more industrial exploration.

Good idea with the respirators, but even if you keep all the nasty-bad stuff out of your lungs, unless you take the time to at least brush yourself down you'll be taking the nasty-bad stuff back with you.
Also, little story of my own to add: I have a friend who lives in Holmdel, New Jersey, Home of the infamous Bell Labs. Well, was, until the eventual closing of it... Anyways, the facility is entirely vacant right now. It's not abandoned-someone still owns it, but the 'security' patrol only comes once a week at the same time every time. It's like everyone there was told to drop what they were doing and LEAVE; he has found burritos still in the microwave, lunchsacks in refrigerators, etc. Even all of the computers are still on, but their CRT monitors have long burnt out. It's really an amazing place when you realize many things came from the labs.
