"Affair" is acceptable. While it might be more associated with spy stories (Man from U.N.C.L.E. had the word in probably every episode title), that is one of the meanings in English. Other words include:
assignment, case, concern, episode, event, hap, happening, incident, job, mission, occurrence, proceeding, project, pursuit, question, subject, task, thing, transaction, undertaking

I would stay with the word affair.
I know it may sound a bit odd, but sometimes Henbe's use of the English language just adds a considerable amount of charm to the entire story.
Like some of the classic movies where the inspector says, "Eh, how you Americans say it..."
And now we're hot on the trail of dear Fifine's first adventure, er ah, I mean affair.

I'll admit, my mind went with the wrong definition as well. That's what makes English such a pain, the same word can have several very different meanings. While "affair" is grammatically fine, it does tend to bring to mind other definitions, especially in the context used. Again, it's not you, it's the English language. While there's no need to change it, I will say that it might not be a bad idea to use a different word, if only to prevent some of the dirtier minds around here (of which I think there are far too many) from coming to the wrong interpretation and lambasting you for mentioning a 6 year old having an "affair". Not only are there dirty minds around here, but some very critical and uncompromising ones as well.
