“Reptile – Vol.2”
This is an alternate cover for my second graphic novel “Might and Magic”.
Somehow, I felt the urge to draw “Reptile Cynrik” and his deadly foe “Thronos” (an Ichiak demon) in a dynamic battle scene.
This time, I wanted to be “brave” and used the “manga-hard-shading-style”… this is a drawing style with bold black shades. Usually, that doesn’t look so good… but if the shades are set properly, it can look quite excellent. ^^
Anyway, enjoy Reptile in action!!
BONUS:
Here are the alternate covers for my graphic novels volume 1 and 3 (I’ve used some older artworks for these covers, so there’s not much new work):

New artworks for the other comics eh?
Does that mean you are reworking the covers for Circle of Doom and Freezing Storm, or whatever the title was for the Star Trek/Reptile crossover comic?
If so, I am looking forward to it, and this is a good cover as well, now if only I could read german I could read the rest if the comics :/

Well, some new covers... just like "trade paperbacks", har har. ^^
I will do new covers for "CIRCLE OF DOOM" and "FREEZING STORM", yes. ^^ 2 new covers! But... it will take time. That has a low priority. I just wanted to start with these first 3 covers and see how it looks.
Hey, most comics are already translated into English!!! Or you can at least find a script there, which has been translated.
I guess, just issue #1 and #2 are not translated yet........ we shall see.

XD
Den ersten Comic NEU machen..... hehehe, klar. Die Idee ist geil, aber nun ja. Vielleicht IRGEND WANN mal! ^^
Danke für den Kommentar.

Well, usually I place the shadings in about... 55% opacity. My shadings are usually softer and lighter, just like you can see it in typical manga/cartoon movies. BUT in THIS case, I have set the shadow to 100% - which is pure BLACK!!!! And it "swallows" some details, yeah.... and most of my line art is gone now... but it just LOOKS GOOD! ^^
And I'm glad you see it that way, too! *hugs*

Well you can try this which helps me sometimes. Hatching or cross-hatching can dramatically make the visual uhm..."pop" out more. or you can try/test little gray highlights. I know sometimes there can be TOTAL black, but it looks like the light source(s?) is/are coming from the ground below(?). Just my thoughts :P
-Are you really making a comic?
*drools over the awesomeness of ReptileCynrik's character: uh....ReptileCynrik*....must...do CAMEO for my work!!

The main light source is coming from above right (behind the viewer)... it is the MOON! AND you are right: some light is coming from below: it is the streetlights and traffic. ^^ You need to think about more than ONE light source sometimes... especially in such an illuminated city.
If you check my other pictures here ("Just for you" or "Ticklish Hero"), you will see that I favour the more soft shading style. BUT this here was an experiement. ;) And to place shadings like THAT allows NOOO mistakes!! So, it was a practise.
About the comic question:
http://reptile-universum.de/reptile.....omicsMain.html
I have drawn 6 comics so far (one comic has two parts)... with 39 to 76 pages overall (for each issue)!
This picture here is a project... an alternate cover for an exsisting comic/graphic novel.
Some comics are even translated and can be viewed in ENGLISH and GERMAN! But I am GERMAN. :P
And like I wrote in ya note: cameo appearance.....? Way to go!!!

Practice or not. I still love it! And i too favor the soft cel-shading. Although i haven't done it too much. It has that certain appeal that when one uses color it can really make the image come alive...more or less :P
The moon? Awww those are probably some of the best light sources evah!
About multiple light sources: what about if one or more character was outside on a sunny day? I know it's an obvious scenario but i have an inkling that light placement could be coming from two light sources.

On a sunny day, it's very tricky.
IF the sun is immensly bright, you have a few soft light sources but ONE big one which causes hard shading.
IF the sun is "normal"... you have an overall bright character BUT with soft shadings. ^^ Because there is environmental light overall around.

Hehehehe... yeaaaaaaaah, that is my graphic novel issue#2! Reptile and Thronos have been transported to EARTH! ^^
Ya know... every artist likes to transport his fantasy character to EARTH at least once in a while. So, while Reptile had to deal with the authorities and human there, Thronos just flew around killing people. Later, they had their epic final battle in the skies... between skyscrapers and streets. Just like "MATRIX - REVOLUTIONS"... but I did NOT know that movie back then (there was no MATRIX at the time)!!!!!
It was just cool.

Er, you cannot buy them. But you can view them all for free at my website. ^^
