Of the three legendary Extremis beasts, Whelkin is by far the most pleasant to see in the wild. While Firmastodon isn't necessarily hostile, it can be quite territorial and isn't shy about chasing intruders off, and Abyddon is extremely aggressive even at the best of times. The gentle, curious Whelkin, however, is more likely to approach a trainer or Pokémon for a chance to interact and examine them, rather than fight. Even if confronted with hostility, it's much more likely to simply flee.
The few recorded and confirmed sightings of Whelkin in the past decades have involved the creature drifting down from its normal environment (thought to be between the thermosphere and the mesosphere due to irradiated shell samples obtained after a battle) to feed. Professors Peach, Peach and Plum theorize that Whelkin mostly feeds on solar energy and converted electricity from upper atmospheric discharges of lightning known as "elves", though when it drops into the lower atmosphere it has been seen grazing on tree tops, and even dropping low enough to rest on the ground for brief periods of time.
Whelkin has never been known to engage in conflict with other Pokémon under normal circumstances, though it has a habit of "studying" objects and entities with its long, flexible appendages, sometimes to the annoyance of whatever creature it's holding upside down and slowly rotating. The only exception to the normally non-confrontational nature of Whelkin is in the presence of Abyddon, the deep-dwelling aquatic member of the Extremis Trio.
For some unknown reason there is what can only be called a lasting enmity and animosity between the two powerful creatures, with Whelkin's normally shy, gentle demeanor being pushed aside for an angry, even cruel mindset. Old Ōshū legends speak of a time when Abyddon cracked Whelkin's shell and tried to feed on the gentle beast, and there has been nothing but hostility ever since. When locked in battle, Whelkin has been said to lift Abyddon high into the air and discharge massive, roaring blasts of lightning through its tentacles before slamming the other Extremis beast into the ground below.
The only reliable force that can stop their fighting, or even prevent it altogether, is the third member of the trio, Frimastodon. The hulking living mountain will place itself between the pair, battling both of them to a standstill, using its stony armor to deflect lightning strikes and its massive bulk and shove Abyddon bak to the sea. The battles are said to rage for hours, with great damage to the surrounding area, but if Firmastodon didn't interfere then the damage would be even worse.
Many Trainers seek to capture mythical and legendary Pokemon, but the question has to be posited: What would happen if one part of the trio was removed? The lore of Ōshū indicates that the three beasts maintain a distinct balance in nature, but how much of that holds true? And what consequences could befall the regions within Ōshū if that balance were disturbed...?
