I love red ants. I hate all ants except these girls here. They rarely bother anyone and you can see their nests far before you accidentally step on them (unlike fire ants ugh)
Also, these ants are an important food source for an endangered species. Horny Toads or Horned Lizards are indeed endangered from lack of habitat or destroyed food sources.
These red ants are one of the main foods for these lizards. Anytime I see a nest of them, I'll usually give them a scrap or two to eat (if i have something available). One, because it's cool to watch them break it down and Two, because it helps them thrive so Horned Lizards survive <3
So, if you see one of these nests, don't kill them or beat up their nests! They might be lizard food!

Then you haven't heard of Velvet Ants. (Also known as Cow Ants) Those suckers can clean a cow clear down to the bones in a single night. Those suckers are huge and they HURT. They also live here in Texas. Even though we have Velvet Ants, I still hate Fire Ants the most. Suckers are annoying as crap and they hurt and they swarm and they are dadgum HARD to get rid of.
those used to be all over the place when i was about three or so. now its very rare to find them in washington county.
i ran across some when i was on a national guard mission for the border patrol in el paso. i would give them bits of food and whatever flys i had killed. its awesome to see these things work. :Þ

some of the bigger varieties of ants (I forget which kinds) have been used as a kind of suture (AKA stitches) by tribal cultures - someone holds the cut closed, while another holds the jaws of the ant in just the right place .... when the ant bites down, they pull the body off, leaving the head! something bout the way the ants work keeps the jaws closed, forming ant-suture #1 !! repeat as needed down the length of the injury.
These ants big heads make me think of that. Saw it on Discovery channel OOODLES of years ago!
