Summer, 1325
The morning sun continued its climb up above the horizon, having left behind the hazy dullness of dawn but still needing time before reaching the beating intensity of noon. The sky was a soothing blue, a few wispy memories of clouds being blown aside by a gentle breeze. These zephyrs descended from the heavens to gently caress dandelions carpeting the rolling hills and valleys below, presenting a general feeling of peace and serenity all around-at least it would have been were it not for the giant reptilian figure, wings furled and body streamlined, diving through the sky. The familiar dragon danced through the heavens like an eel in the water, twisting and turning, drawing graceful curves with his body. As Meratezatgh unfurled his wings back and soared back towards the stratosphere, enjoying all the freedom of the limitless horizon, an indistinct sound could be heard getting drowned out in the wind. As the dragon made another sharp downward descent the voice become more distinct.
“Fffffffffffffuuuuuuucccccccckkkk!”
Logan yelled at the top of his lungs and seized the end of Mera’s neck with all his might as he felt the pit of his stomach fall below his body. A glance up from the dragon's back and the hunter saw the peaceful fields below, so tiny and so far away. He imagined how far a fall would be and how much that would hurt when he splatted against the dandelions below, then shut his eyes and told his brain to shut up.
Wide-eyed and with a stupid grin on his face, Mera undulated in an impressive aerial ballet. The dragon was obviously enjoying it.
“Isn’t this great Logan!” He called to the prone figure on his back. “I just love flight! I love feeling that wind brush past, that adrenaline rush, that all-encompassing emptiness that swallows you! Such freedom! Doesn’t this just make you feel alive?!”
The dragon did a little loop, then plunged straight towards the ground before unfurling his wings at the last minute and catching a low breeze, soaring back up towards the sun.
“The mercy of the heavens! Stop!” Logan finally yelled with his face hugging Mera’s neck.
The dragon ignored him. “This is the life!” He replied to the figure lying prone on his back.
Logan just hoped it would end soon.
