The stuff seems durable? I purchased a plug and play kit off ebay from the suggestions of someone I knew, and it burned out after 4 hours of use. It wasnt until after I recieved the stuff that the seller told me I need to take the batteries out in order to keep it alive.

You might have used too long a piece of EL wire for the adapter. Certain adapters can only handle short lengths of EL wire (the smallest can handle 18 inches) so it's highly possible you overloaded it. (= That'll cause it to be dim and possibly ruin your EL wire.
