Another exhausting day is finally behind me. The last one before we arrive at the manor. I'm exhausted from all this walking, but at least I didn't have to carry the vixen in my arms like I had to yesterday. Indeed, this morning Irlen and Sorda had a little present for me. I was happily surprise when I saw that they indeed made a little makeshift sled so that we could carry the vixen to the manor more easily. The sled is very crude, but effective nonetheless. Some long branches were cut and tied together with ropes so that the sled would slide on the snow. Some shorter ones, raised to make the straighter floor a little higher than the snow level, were put together to make a platform for the vixen to rest. In its entirety, the sled was not very solid, but withstood the trip well despite its simple creation. However, we did have to take breaks to tighten the ropes to prevent it from falling apart on the way, but other than that. This nice addition saved us a lot of time and saved me a lot of effort!
Even with this new addition, it didn’t change Serenna and Sortor as both of them didn't want to get close to it. It was like they thought she would curse them or something like that, but on the other hand. I would have been very surprised if either of them had grown a conscience during the night.
For Irlen and Sorda. I’m quite happy of theirs effort. They did help me to the best of theirs ability, but despite their willingness to participate. They had their limits. Irlen is too small for this kind of thing. After all, the vixen is much heavier than she is, and that doesn't count the weight of the sledge. As for Sorda, he did try pulling the sledge, but after an hour or so, he looked like he was ready to collapse in the snow from the effort, so I had to take it back from him, so he won’t be another body to carry around. But all of this is unimportant as we finally made it to our third and final stop before the mansion and that her state didn't get any worse on the way here.
Speaking of her. Now that we're back in my tent. I was able to take the time to change her bandages again. It was good to see that they had fresh blood in them. Very little, but a small amount nonetheless. I think that her body must be warming up, coming back to life as time goes by. However, she still hasn't spoken, nor did she move when I removed them. At least this time the wounds were not dirty, and the bandages were not frozen in place. Removing them was much easier than the first time.
However, today I noticed that she had broken ribs and not just one. It's going to take her over a month to recover, and that's if the bone didn’t pierce anything. Poor girl.
For the other wounds. They haven't changed. Nothing positive, but nothing negative at least. Maybe the cold is reducing the healing? I don’t know... At least she shows sign of life. Very little, but some nonetheless. So I still have hope that she's going to be ok when we reach the manor.
At last! We have finally reached the comfort and protection of the manor! The last day of walking is behind me! After everything I went through, I will definitely have a good and long night sleep without a tiresome day after it! I’m totally exhausted from all that walking and caring, but also extremely happy to have ultimately arrived. In all my life, I never thought I would be so happy to sleep in an old abandoned manor in the middle of nowhere and even if my legs as well as my back are killing me after this road, I think it’s a small price to pay for what I did. I gave that vixen a chance. At least tonight we'll have a real roof over our heads and that won't be a luxury. Although I would have swapped my blanket for a nice warm bath and a hot and juicy meal without hesitation is I was able to...
For our time at the mansion, we have decided to make our last camp in the living room. It’s a room large enough for all of us to sleep well and that also has a fireplace to keep us warm. A good spot to relax and rest after our travel.
After all, the manor was almost as cold as the outside when we arrived. It was very obvious that no one had lived here for a very long time, but those thick walls of wood and stone will keep the heat in better than the cloth canvas of our tent, so in a day or two. This place should be as warm as it could! The worse is irrevocably behind me!
As I didn’t have a bed for the vixen, other than my own. I used what was lying in the living room. I take the blanket from the furniture and the couch already have cousin, so I was able to make her a nice and warm bed close to the fire. After all, she'll be much better off on a couch that's probably cost more than me, than stuck like fish in a barrel in my tent. Although... true be told... I didn't mind it too much... I have lived in fare worse, after all.
As for me, as much as I wanted to stay close to her. I had to move a little further away. The fire is too warm for me, but that doesn't seem to be the case for Sorda and Sortor who are both the closest to it. Serena is the furthest away. She's settled herself in a corner. As far away from the fire and from us as possible. I hope she would be sleeping outside, but I guess we can’t have everything we want, and I already have a roof, so I shouldn’t complain!
Tomorrow, we will start our work here. Sorda said that we will start by a tour of the house to see if there was any sign of foul play or obvious theft, and also to finish preparing for our stay. Fishing, chopping wood, hunting. That sort of thing, because he says that storms in the area are very common and that they could last for several days. Better safe than sorry!
