Prompt: roughened thoughtfulness
“One hundred!”
“Thank you, Sir!” Holly fairly screamed, the sable’s back arching into it, accepting the pain and making it work for her. She froze there, suspended, muscles locked as her nerves screamed at her.
The moment passed, and she slumped to the bench, boneless and limp, gasping.
The sable’s universe was pain. Her limbs sang a descant to the aria of agony coming from her back. Her breath rasped out of a dry mouth, grown hoarse from screaming. The backs of her legs were on fire, and even her tail hurt.
The mastiff’s paw, wide as a catcher’s mitt, came down on her shoulder. She flinched at first, and gave a soft, cracked, purring moan as he rubbed a knot out of the muscle. “Here,” and he put the spout of a water bottle to her lips and squeezed. She drank thirstily, grateful for his consideration.
When he withdrew the bottle she lay there, chest heaving, as he brought both paws into play to rub her shoulders and upper back.
Holly had no sense of time. It could have been seconds, or days, before Jim asked, “Feeling better?”
She nodded.
“Good. I’ll give you a few more minutes, and we’ll get back at it.”
He walked away from her, and Holly began to steel herself for what was to come.
But it was worth it, to have a personal trainer like Jim.

A couple of lines from my book two:
“But I will give you one small word of advice. Your captain can be quite the taskmaster. If you pursue this endeavor, be very sure this is what you want before asking for his help with it.”
“Are you saying he goes overboard on the training?” Mike asked.
“I mean the more he cares the harder he’ll push,” Howey told them. “If he thinks you’re just ‘good enough’ he’ll force you to become better.”

As one does.
" Heeded my words not, did you? Pass on what you have learned. Strength. Mastery. But weakness, folly, failure also. Yes, failure most of all. The greatest teacher, failure is. Luke, we are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters. "
