Ahh, Blue's Clues. A whimsical, charming and cheerful show about solving mysteries with a blue, animated pup in a colourful house and even teleporting into pictures and books. We have to agree that we all grew up watching this show when we only just two years of age.
Now, let's begin with the boring old basics to the show for those who have not seen this crystal of a childhood classic.
Blue's Clues was an American live action/animated hybrid show that provided education and adventure for the child audience as they enter the house and are greeted by the show's host, Steve Burns as Steve and everyone's lovable, little dog named after her bright colour, Blue. It was originally made back in 1996 and lasted for six seasons, finishing up in 2006. I don't really feel like explaining how the plot to the show's episodes go, or anything else, but that's because I'm pretty sure everyone knows the show since they were born. (Similar to me with Thunderbirds, but I think I'm going off topic)
The show ran very far with Steve as I've read online, but then in 2002, it became confirmed that Steve was planning on leaving the show to pursue a musical course, so season 4's final three episodes would be the last episodes Steve would star in where we see him passing the baton of hosting the show to Donovan Patton as Steve's brother, Joe before he leaves the show in the final episode of season 4 'Steve Goes To College.'
Thus, the viewers are introduced to Joe for the last two seasons.
Aside from Blue, Steve and Joe, the series had a ton of other characters in it like, Magenta, Tickety Tock, Sidetable Drawer, MailBox, The Spice family (Mr Salt, Mrs Pepper, Paprika and Cinnamon), Slippery Soap, Periwinkle, Shovel and Pail, Cash Register and many, many others.
I feel like this review isn't going too well, but of course, I was focusing mostly on comparing the show to how it was aired in my country and what I think about the reboot.
Well, as I live in UK, Blues Clues was of course a little different for me. Aside from the animated characters having different voice actors, Mailbox, Shovel and Pail had their names changed to Post Box, Spade and Bucket. (To be honest, I think Shovel and Pail's UK names are much better, Bucket and Spade make so much more sense to me). The show also had only one host which was Kevin Duala as Kevin. Not sure why everyone makes a massive fuss about him saying 'hate' in the UK version of 'Blue Is Frustrated', but then again, what do I know? Also, because UK only had one host, the final three episodes of season 4 were never made for the UK. I think Kevin deserves credit for how he combines the personalities of Steve and Joe to entertain the child audience. OH! I totally forgot to mention how a couple of the show's songs go in the UK version. Well, the So Long song, doesn't have much of a change. Its first lyrics, "Now it's time for So Long. But we'll sing just one more song", are replaced with, "Now it's time for Farewell. You know, you've really done well." But the mail time song (or post time song) as it was named in the UK version's lyrics are completely re-written. I won't write down the lyrics of the mail time song since everyone knows how it goes, but I will write down the UK one.
"Postman's here, the postman's here, letters come from far and near, all year round, they make me wanna CHEER!!" I personally think it's a little better than the original one since the "when it comes, I wanna wail, MAIL!" line doesn't really seem to do it for me.
Well, I think that's all I can say for here, I think it's time we, "Blue skidoo to the reboot!"🎶
Now, then. The reboot AKA Blue's Clues and You. I haven't really seen any episodes of the show, but I seen a few clips before and I must say, it's rather nice.
However, I really don't think Blue's Clue's and You should be considered as a reboot, I think of it as more of a follow-up to the original. I think it's nice that the animated characters are all pretty much the same, but are now made with CGI while still keeping how they originally look and I think it was a genius idea to redesign Paprika and Cinnamon to be older, as this reinforces the series as a follow-up to the original and reflects on the people who watched the show when they were children who have probably already became parents with children of their own by the time the show came out in 2019. As for their parents, I think it's interesting that Mr Salt and Mrs Pepper have now got two new members of the family, those being the tiny twins, Ginger and Sage. I think this works so the newer generation of fans can learn the same elements from episodes like 'Nurturing' and 'The Baby's here' like the original generation of fans did when Paprika and Cinnamon were Sage and Ginger's ages.
Also, I think it must be a dream come true for the host of the reboot, Josh Dela Cruz, considering how he used to watch the show as a boy and is now starring in the reboot as Josh, cousin to Steve and Joe, not to mention, the hosts of the original even make returning appearances to the show, that really packs a giant, nostalgia flavoured punch to the fans of the original show. (Too bad we haven't seen characters like Periwinkle and Cash Register appear again)
Well, that's everything I can think of saying. I know it's a bit of a mess with some bits that I've written and most of this is my thoughts on the reboot. i hope you enjoyed hearing me talk about this generation shaping childhood classic.
