A bit of a story I cooked up for Hearts and Hooves day. Getting ahead of myself in Thistle's world. But what the heck, if ponies can have trains, cars aren't that far off! We'll call this part one, as, like anything else, these things can grow... =^^=
Buttercup exited the little shop, a small load of groceries loading her saddlebags. She trotted to her compact yellow coupe.
“Happy Hearts and Hooves day Buttercup!” said the shopkeep
“Thank you Mrs. Primrose!” Buttercup smiled at the slightly older orange mare, her tail swishing happily.
Buttercup deposited her bags in the trunk of the coupe and sighed. She looked up at the clear blue skies, the warm sun reflected in her eyes. “If only Green were as interested in today as I was...” She thought to herself. She pressed the start button and the magical engine purred to life. “Off to home...”
As she pulled out she heard a soft pop behind her. Initially, she did not think much of it as she started the journey home, but after a few minutes her intuition kicked in, and she pulled off the side of the road parking under a tree. Exiting the vehicle, she heard a gentle hissing. A quick glance confirmed the presence of a nail in her right rear tire.
Buttercup snorted. She tested the pressure with her hoof. The tire felt distinctly soft, but the leak seemed reasonably slow. “I can probably get you home, and mend you there.” she sighed. Then she thought a moment. Scanning the horizon, she could barely make out a green dot soaring in the sky. A smile crept across her muzzle an idea forming in her head. “You're on cloud patrol today, aren't you?”
Quickly Buttercup entered her couple and changed directions. Driving a little faster she failed to avoid some of the rougher sections of the road. The nail in her tire worked its way deeper into her innertube. The bumps made her poor tube stretch and squirm, allowing more air to escape.
Buttercup scanned the skies, getting closer to where the green dot circled lazily overhead. A rhythmic pish-pish-pish from behind told her the tire's leak was getting worse. The rear of the car felt decidedly squishy. However, she soon saw her quarry not that far in front of her.
Buttercup found herself in front of a grove of trees. She pulled off the road and stopped the car. She could almost feel the rear of her car sink with the deflating tire. Turning off the engine, she hopped out scanning the skies. “Soon Green, you can be my hero...”
“But first, let's make this good...” Walking around her car to the front, her rear hoof darted into her right front tire, pressing the sharpest corner of her horseshoe into the soft rubber.
“Ok, just some pressure, the right way...” She pressed the tire, using the strength in her Earth Pony magic. The corner of her hoof dug in deeper. “A little more...” Her hoof sank deeper and deeper into the rubber. “A bit of a tap?”
One last nudge upward and her magic strained the innertube past it's limit. Buttercup shuddered as she felt the soft pop as her hoof punctured her innertube. A rapid hiss confirmed that her tire would soon be flat. She could feel her cheeks burning as her tire wilted behind her. Soon she could see a green Pegasus circling back around the trees. She smiled broadly and waved her hooves in the air to get his attention. “Green down here! I could use your help!”

Right now I kinda see them as magic / electric cars, developed by Flim and Flam. (Based off the Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 3000 concept, just minus the cider processing equipment) Initial power source will be from unicorn magic, but that can change as other tinkerers get ahold of the concept! =^^=
Hmmm, that gives me a further idea... As I had in this story bit, I touch on how each pony breed has it's own form of magic, that can be focused in a variety of ways. It is how Buttercup popped her tire, and how Green... Oops, that will be in the next installment! =P
But anyways, that might be it, to have somepony figure out a bit of a magical generator that can allow a pony to gather energy through their inherent talents. (If for no other reason than to prevent unicorns from being turned into mobile filling stations! =^^=

That’s actually canon. :) We learn in season four that Earth ponies and Pegasi also have their own kind of magic. The magic Earth ponies have give them the strength and ability to tend to the land and crops, while the magic pegasi have gives them their abilities to tend to the weather. Oddly enough, when Lord Tirek stole the magic from all of the pegasi of Equestria, the loss of their magic also took away their ability to fly, suggesting that their magic is somehow connected to their ability to fly. It’s actually quite fascinating how Earth ponies and pegasi have their own unique kind of magic that they use everyday without even realizing it. :)
You are exactly right, it is just that unicorn magic is a little more obvious in it's manifestation, so collecting the other race's magic in a battery might be a tad different...
Pegasi magic makes sense, in that from a raw physics viewpoint, their wings are not large enough top make them fly, let alone at some of the speeds that RD has recorded. (I believe mach 9 in the Sonic Rainboom?) =^^=
