My good friend and classmate with a silly alias, http://soraxrikulover.deviantart.com/ , is an aspiring comic book illustrator and was open for $1 commissions! Among other things, I had this piece drawn, and as a tip I bought her lunch. (She decided to only get a grilled cheese sandwich from the gas station.) You should go look at her dA.
The original concept was a Persian (as in the Pokémon) playing a sitar (an Indian instrument of Persian descent). Because proper sitar posture really only works with a human form, there had to be some anthropomorphisation, and ultimately the character seems to have turned out as a Persian-like catboy than a human-like Persian, which is fine too. I was more excited about the sitar itself, anyway.
The artist commented that the sitar was a real pain, but she knew that she had to get it just right because as a lover of musical instruments, I would recognise any slight mistake (pointing out such mistakes has gotten me a bit of mouth in the past). I think she did a great job with the instrument! The tuning pegs and bridges are all in the right place with the proper shape, and it's hard to criticise fret placement because the frets on a sitar are movable anyway. Beside the sitar, I am also a huge fan of the shading here, and those cloth folds. So nicely coloured.
The facial hair is not something one would imagine to be on the face of a Persian. I think that may be a reference to my own, which looks just like that. (I only keep the beard because I hate shaving. Such a pain.)
I love stretchable text fields in Google Chrome.
