Well, since you asked...
Young Xander is destined for greatness. He's not just performing a layup, he's performing a runner, which is actually a sophisticated move for a little kid. When most kids play basketball, all they think about is hucking the ball into the air and hoping it goes straight down through the hoop. With a runner, you're actually aiming for the backboard just over the hoop, and you have to give the ball a "soft touch" (put it up gently) since your body's momentum transfers to the ball. If you give it too much force, it'll bounce away instead of rolling back into the hoop.
It's not an especially difficult shot, but the fact that Xander is attempting it shows he's learned a lot about the game. Whether someone taught him how to shoot a runner or he saw a photo of someone doing it in Furballer magazine or he just figured it out on his own, it means the kid has really been working on his game to a point where he's already thinking about different ways to shoot and move on the court. Kids his age generally don't think about that.
I love how Malcolm is just staring slack-jawed at what Xander's doing. He probably has no idea what Xander is doing and thinks he's being stupid for putting up the ball so softly and not aiming it right. He may think differently when the ball does come off the backboard and catches twine.
This is a shooter in training. Making shots off the dribble is an art form, and if Xander masters it, he'll be an asset to any team he plays with.
