The Thing in the Sky was still there, and while it had done nothing but sit there for the past few days, Mayor Ess Quid was not having the best day. Add being three months pregnant with all its little wonders/pains into the mix and the headache only increased.
Ages ago the village had voted that the mayor be chosen by lottery, believing it a more honest form of election. It had worked for the past couple centuries. And when her number had come up, she had been happy to do her part. Until "it" had appeared.
"It" had resulted in nonstop meetings with the rangers and sheriffs, as well as the village ancients and business owners, and now she was waiting on word from the capital all the way in Dawn Again. Couldn't the universe give her a break? Dunee was supposed to be a quiet place where nothing happened.
She missed her job as a baker. Sure, her bread wasn't as fabulous as Aeyst's on the dock with her secret herb and mineral mix, but it made her happy.
She entered her office, watered her plants, then dusted her shelves needlessly before sitting behind her desk. She promptly dropped her head upon its surface and moaned.
"Please let today be somewhat normal," she pleaded.
Then the door opened and a bard walked in wearing the uniform of a deputy sheriff. While her heart lifted at the sight of him, his frown crushed her.
"Message from the capitol, love," he said regrettably as he lay the scroll upon her table. He stood patiently across from her as she scanned it, her ears dropping further with every word.
Taking a moment to compose herself, needing several deep breaths, and a glass of tea. Oh how she wished for something stronger.
"I... I need everyone gathered in the village square," she said weekly. "Give me three hours. I need to be presentable for them."
The bard nodded, coming around to give her a kiss before leaving the office, door softly closing behind him. Leaving her alone once more.
In silence, Quid approached her mirror and began practicing what she would say as she combed her mane and straightened her accessories. This was not going to be a normal day
---
In the village square with a light breeze blowing through the grand Nuua trees, the villagers gathered in mass. The deputy sheriffs, working with the rangers, had managed to locate and deliver the message across the village and surrounding land.
They stood in a circle as they waited in anticipation for their mayor to arrive. Many casting weary eyes at the thing in the sky.
Quid arrived on time, solemn and straight for this important moment. She cleared her throat.
"Friends. Its been three days since the mysterious thing appeared above our beloved village," her voice was even as she spoke up for all to hear. "While it has done nothing, it has not eased our hearts any. And just a few hours ago, we received a decision from the capitol regarding it."
Ears perked up at that.
She lifted the scroll and cleared her throat.
"Dear citizens of Dunee, concern for this phenomenon has not gone unheeded. And while no sign of aggression has been observed, we will not risk our citizens to indecision. So it is with a heavy heart that the area surrounding Dunee is to be evacuated until we can further understand the situation."
The crowd gasped and chattered in alarm. The mayor continued.
"You will be granted a week to gather your belonging. Lodgings and supplies will be provided if you do not wish to stray too far from your home village. You will also be compensated for any loss of business or property, until this matter is sorted. I ask that you remain calm and professional in the strange time.
Signed, Max Dehoby"
The mayor hung her head as she rolled up the scroll while the village erupted into cries of alarm and questions were thrown all over the place.
It was overwhelming, she wanted to collapse upon the dirt. Then a familiar deputy appeared by her side. She leaned against him and closed her eyes.
"What are we going to do, Skeep?" She sniffed into his chest as he comforted her.
