I would say that there are several things:
-the first is the influences I can have when I browse Pinterest, or other platforms, and I find original and interesting content, I try to understand what I like about the renderings I find. For example the colors and properties of a gemstone, or get inspired by animal shapes (real or fantasy animal), the patterns that you can see on some designs, that bring a plus ...etc.
-Second, I start an illustration without necessarily having a very precise idea in mind, so I make a draft that will suggest shapes that I like, or conversely shapes that I like less and that I sharpen with the eraser. As I sharpen the shape with the eraser, I find something that seems relevant. To sum up, I experiment on some of my illustrations, and it avoids the frustration of having a too precise idea that you can't reproduce.
