Strike no matche…! Eep, too late.
While Port Talbot Steelworks has come quite a ways to reduce its carbon footprint in recent years, there is only so much that a massive steel plant can do, especially in certain processes. The flame you see here burns at around 1200°C as excess gases from the Coke Ovens escape. That it is still burning bright this late at night is a testament to the enduring nature of the steelworks, that work goes on here all hours of each day, every day.
Hope you enjoy!

Wish you could have seen Bethlehem Steel in it prime! Yes it was an environmental nightmare but back during WW2 it literally saved our asses and the collective asses of most of Europe by making enough steel and materials to keep TWO fronts going. It's scary to think that ONE PLANT was able to outproduce ENTIRE COUNTRIES before mismanagement destroyed it. History lesson aside that's an awesome image. Please do NOT stop sharing your pictures and vision with us. :D
I read recently that the Bethlehem Steel plant is currently being redeveloped for producing anchors and components for offshore wind turbines, so it's rather satisfying that in a way, it will be helping to put right the environmental nightmare that it helped to created. ^^
And thank you very much! You're very kind to say so. :)

Oh, absolutely! What puts the fear of hell into me is when there is low cloud above the plant and the coke ovens are firing; the whole sky turns orange, and the sounds echoing through the night are the stuff of nightmares. Weird to think that for those working there day and night, it is just a normal shift.
