A fragment; sort of based on a real event on Mill Ave. in Tempe. Just trying to get back into the Thursday Prompts. No attempt was made to make this Furry; I don't think I have the skill to translate religion into a furry world. Not yet, anyway.

You know, at my college, we would have a preacher come out to the center of campus, exactly how you described, with pamphlets and a megaphone in hand. And, of course, he was usually made into a side-show attraction by the student body who loved to try and put him to the test. I'm not big on pushing one's religion like this, but I really didn't think he deserved that much flak. This story made me wish he had an audience like the atheist and Penny.
Long comment, yeah... Basically, this was a great read.

Reminds me very much of 4th Avenue in Tucson AZ. I live in Tucson and I gotta say, you just about described it exactly. No theaters, but there are bars, resturaunts, shops and more that cannot be found anywhere else. The only thing resembling a chain store is a small DairyQueen which, in my opinion, has been incorporated into the overall spirit of 4th Ave. and has lost it's 'chain' status. One could say it's only a matter of time, but I don't think anybody would allow chains to take over. Not any time soon, because despite the heavy pedestrian traffic, the prime location, and it's tendency to get very overwhelmed with customers, it hasn't grown or spread. It seems content to just be a little DQ shop, tucked away, almost hidden from view. ^^
It's nice when a town does have an area like this. I think putting in a lot of effort to "make it happen" usually ends up failing--like a friendship, or a marriage, they take work to maintain, but making it work "on purpose" just doesn't seem possible. You can't pick where it will be...unfortunately, you can drive it away if you fiddle with it too much.
