Aster's minor in mythology brought him to plenty of places to study. And his interest in curses and convenient lycanthropy makes acquiring and removing curses fairly easy.

Turns out a lot of the ocean holds many secrets. Including some relics lost in time only to be uncovered by those daring enough to explore. Some people say magic made the merfolk, others insist its special kelp or shells, some even saying it was evolution. Aster found out that it is a mix of everything. He is able to join them in their world by mixing pearls with merfolk scales. And just like the land dwelling merfolk he can get out of the water and slowly dry to regain his legs again.
