Mason
—Was first thought to represent Junior’s sense of Repressed Rage, but really represents Heartbreak.
—He manifested when he lost two very important people from his childhood and experienced his earliest sense of heartbreak. That moment forever changed him, and he came to the conclusion that he couldn’t rely on anyone else but himself. Mason is actually his last name. He hasn’t used his first name for such a long time that he doesn’t seem to remember it very clearly.
—Mason is the only persona who doesn’t wear diapers and is disgusted by the fact that the other personas do wear them.
—Strengths:
—Was a talented football player that often singlehandedly carried his team to victory
—He began to do strenuous labor at an early age, thus he is technically the one responsible for the incredible strength of the body he and the other personas share
—When he is not angry, he tends to be in a state of numb, emotionlessness. The fact that this is his state when he is not not interacting with anyone or anything has made Smarty Pants theorize as to whether this may be closer to his true nature.
—One of Mason’s most terrifying abilities is that he seems to call upon the other personas’ talents without their usual drawbacks:
- Demonstrates a sense of logic/intellect on level to that of Smarty Pants.
- Can numb himself like Spike so that he doesn’t feel fatigue or immediate pain from physical damage
- Seems to be able to perform Junior’s acrobatic stunts from muscle memory
- Can shatter glass by hitting a certain frequency with his voice like Baby J
—Weaknesses:
—He main weakness is his barely repressed, constant seething anger.
—Unlike Spike’s anger, which has a sense of deranged glee to it, Mason’s anger is defined by sheer malice and contempt.
—Mason’s persona has seemed to be locked in a state of bitter anger ever since he lost control of his body.
—He is desperately looking for every opportunity to regain control, but the others are determined to keep him from doing so at all costs
—It is incredibly difficult to wrest control of the body from Mason, as it is usually strong negative feelings that can’t be easily forgotten that allow him to take control. One surprising weakness of his is that he so adamantly refuses to see himself as a clown, that if clown makeup were applied to his face, he would immediately retreat back into the mindspace, allowing Junior to regain control. This is not a true solution though, as it does not allow Mason to relinquish control of the bodily willingly. In order for Mason to truly want to give up control of the body, he (and Junior) must learn to feel self-love and acceptance.
(The following is no longer canon, but I thought I would share it anyway 😅).
—Relationship to the other personas within the ‘mindscape’:
—Smarty Pants: Mason has little tolerance for Smarty Pants attempts to either lecture him or understand him. He is not above delivering a few quick blows to the intellectual persona, yet he finds that verbal attacking Smarty Pants tends to hurt in a more meaningful sense. He notices that this is especially true whenever he points out everyone favors Beau’s company over his, calling him the almost as ‘unpopular’ as he is.
—Mason: Mason and Spike tend to engage in full out brawls with each other, as verbal tactics tend to not work on the latter. However, because of Spike’s ability to ignore pain and his willingness to engage in clowny antics, he’s usually able to trap Mason one way or the other. Mason realizes that Spike is one of the few other personas who feels anger tangibly as well, making him realize that he might be able to twist that to his own advantage.
—Beau: Mason hates Beau, as he is the only other persona who is not a clown, but seems to be sharing the body more frequently with Junior. Mason fears that he may supplant him their body’s default, non-clown persona, and thus he wants to figure out Beau’s weaknesses as soon as possible so that he can exploit them. He also seems to be personally offended by the fact that Beau is able to feel calmness, given everything they experienced in the past.
—Junior: Although Mason hates all of the other personas, he despises Junior most of all because he views him as the ‘start’ of when things began falling apart him. Before he started becoming Junior, he was on track to become a major league football player. However, everything he thought he knew was changed and the goals he once had suddenly lost significance. The strange thing is that Mason doesn’t necessarily miss playing football. What he truly hates is the instability Junior brought into his life. Mason wants control again so that he can have a sense of order once more and quell all the emotions the personas have experiencing, for if there is anything he has learned, having feelings is what gets your heart broken.
—Baby J: Mason has no patience for Baby J. He views him as a living caricature of what their body has become. While one some level, he would like to brutalize Baby J the same way he occasionally attacks the others, he usually ends up avoiding him if he can. It’s said that hearing Baby J cry is very painful for him and brings back memories/feelings he would rather forget.
