“We went out for dinner again. Dinner at TGIFriday’s again. She wanted to bring her friend again, the friend that I know has a crush on her. They always seem to have a fun time whenever they are around. It’s amusing to watch them laugh and make insider jokes to each other. They have a lot of interesting topic to talk about, most of them I’m not even familiar with. I didn’t complain at all. I just wanted to be in a social group from time to time.
“ They continue to chat throughout dinner time. I remained quiet, almost a bit distant. I just nosh on some of the appetizer nachos as we wait for the main coarse. They drink and laugh and fool around. I remain still and quiet, almost like a fly on the wall. They know that I’m there with them, but I mostly look at myself as the small break in the conversation or if one of them goes to the bathroom and the other talks to me for a while.
“ I really don’t know what to say in their conversations since they have a longer friendship history than I do with my friend. I feel like if I say anything out of context, I would look like an idiot, or like a small baby bird trying to chirp in a group of older birds.
I just wait until dinner is done and I will pay the check…”

Your staging and expressions are just incredible, O-K. Everything you wrote is right there in the picture-- the looks in their eyes, the way they lean toward each other, the positioning of the items on the table. The crinkled napkin is a stellar touch-- to me, it hints at her picking up and putting down the glass again and again, she's been so busy talking. While the flat napkin says the other friend is mostly listening, though she's engaged from the way she touches her chin. Though-- I can't help but think maybe she's just really polite.
Sometimes our "friends" really aren't-- and I'm betting things between the chatting pair aren't as rosy as the sulking one thinks.
