Ghost lights, or will-o-the-wisps as they're often known, are traditionally said to be ghostly spirits trying to lure travellers to their doom in swamps or marshland. In modern day, they're believed to be based on sightings of ignited swamp gas.

Suffice to say, both sides are extremely wrong.
