why some SD's are called porch units its a frame ment to have a steamheater unit installed with an extended hood (SDP40's) but the railroad never had them installed

Wow, thanks, I didn't know that. I had heard there was a reason, but I wasn't sure what it was. Yes, its nice to see some old power out and about, wish we could get more of that down here in Southern California.

Those SDP40s were for passenger service only but by the time they were being built passenger service on class ones was going bye bye.

If I remember right BN got only a few of the SDP40s.

the SDP40's thay got in the merger from Great Northern these units are just standard SD40's built on the SDP frames EMD had to something with them after the railroads stoped buying them so i bet some deals where made to get rid of them

That's why the deck is so huge on these?! Cool! We are using one of these as a yard goat, MU'd with a yard engine for beltpack. Love riding the point on ours ha ha so much room XD
