I miss my 69 Cougar convertible, just had it fully restored from the wheels up. Spent back then over $4500 doing it properly. Only to have it stolen a month later. My insurance company only gave me book value instead of restoration value, $1200. Car was appraised at $14k back then. Their excuse was I didn't have THEM appraise it. 3 months after settlement it was found in Arkansas and shipped back to Arizona.
While sitting on the carrier, in New Mexico, car was stolen yet again. 6 months later car was found again in Arkansas and recovered. This time made it back to Tucson. I got notification the car was back and to head to the police impound lot and pick it up. I immediately went down, only to find out the cops auctioned it off the day before I got the letter. I yelled at them I wasn't notified about an auction, showing the cancelation of the letter was day OF THE AUCTION. Turned out a number of cops wanted that car and bid on it themselves. And LEGALLY did "notify me in advance of sale" (day of sale those bastards.) I confronted the cop who won, demanding action and threatened to sue to get my car back. He quickly resold the car the next day to a guy in Colorado (I suspect a in-law or kin) .
I miss that car to this day. And it's been over 35 years.
