Fall, 1424
Jayna and Mera watched as the first of the Grand Imperial Army descend from the mountain passes and into the Alba Piedmont. The columns marched slowly, carefully picking their way down the steep slopes. Banners were tattered, soldiers were stumbling and the ranks were not as tight as they had appeared during the earlier encounters in Corioli. The enemy force was still massive, and Pillow’s forces had been better supplied and better equipped, but it was also clear that they had suffered significant losses and were struggling down the snow-covered path.
“The Back Valley has also been hard on them, despite the Overmountain Men.” The dragon observed.
“Seems like it.” Jayna agreed.
“If we use fire, the ice melting from the snowbanks would cause an avalanche, slaughtering the columns and probably blocking Altamont Pass for days.”
“I could see that.”
Mera turned to Jayna, smoke rising from his nostrils.
“Shall we take them then?”
The Arcadian leader shook her head. “No.”
Mera was taken aback. “Why not? They are at their weakest now. We could drive them back, bottle them in the mountains. Let them starve.”
“It doesn’t seem right to slaughter our enemies even when they don’t have a chance to respond. People will also say we pulled a dirty trick to win. And it seems cruel.”
“People will say whatever they like. Also Pillow’s forces still outnumber us and they will also use whatever tricks it takes to win against us. War is cruel no matter how it's done.”
“I want to fair a victory against Pillow’s army. Besides, I want them to surrender to us. It will show everyone the mercy of our revolution, and persuade others to defect.”
“If he were here Chagraff would agree with me. He’s commanding the rear guard currently you know.”
“He probably would. But he also knows that I have to put in some political considerations. Let us leave. We will warn the army that our pursuers are five days away.”
Mera sighed as the smoke dissipated from his nostrils, but leaned down to let Jayna climb onto his back.
“I fear someday your mercies will endanger us all, Jayna Durham.”
