Well, Tenon isn't a farmer, per se. He's a woodworker, but he does do projects around Applejack's farm.
However, I will note I have seen (and I have) done farming in practically as little as Tenon is wearing. Most crops aren't looking to scratch or poke you, and since its very rare to see an equine with sunburn, why not be comfortable?
