Good eye! I usually shrink body parts to make them disappear. That's my way to make 3D modular stuffs.

Click on the model's armature, then go to Pose mode. Then click the Scale button. Click on a bone to resize it, then enter 0 and poof! That bone disappeared!

Then you can try to do that instead and then put your modified characters into the scenery of your choice. ^^
