Curtis was born into a life of luxury as the heir of an aristocratic Mercian family. After studying history and languages at the kingdom's most prestigious academies, he grew restless in his desire to apply his studies and headed south under the pretense of making the rounds of the noble houses. Once out of sight of his overbearing parents, the young upper-cruster sought adventure in the fledgling federation of the Tropical Union. Recruited by the Volunteer Ranger Corps for his expertise of the ancient architecture and power stations they encountered in the Wild Wastes, he eventually earned the respect of his fellows and joined the team full-time.

Since the corps' dissolution, Curtis earned his teaching credentials and works at the Stonehead City College.
