I would mostly blame younger me's poor writing/pacing issues that I had to work around, but it is a pretty common psychological thing that panic/high-stress situations make people not think clearly or see an obvious solution to something, so it makes sense (to me, at least X'D) why she'd use it more out of spur-of-the-moment instinct rather than consciously thinking to use it earlier
