I'm actually really happy with this design, I had a lot of fun, trying to combine pony likeness and Harpy designs based on the classic Greek images into one being.
Brief notes on Harpys
- They have a rivalry with Sirens (I decided that they have conflict with Sirens as, as a sort of Meta thing, as the original 'Greek' Sirens, looked a lot more like Harpies, but modern day portray Sirens like mermaids) So what if Harpies were once considered very important to a key moment in their lands history, but then got written out and replaced by Sirens? so now they seek to be rewritten back into history and not ignored on their island!

Part of an overarching saga I thought would make a perfect Season 5 before it actually premiered. In my version, a riot would break out in Tartarus and the Mane Six would be called upon to quell it. Although they succeed, two escapes are reported, one of them Ma & Pa Apple's killer, a harpy named Shemdai (don't ask), so Applejack goes off alone to recapture her, although her friends and family fear she's out for blood. Then comes the moment of truth, when circumstances put Shemdai at the mighty equine's mercy...and she clops away, leaving her punishment to the law. That would've only been the beginning.
I just realized that I never actually answered your question. I heard on another (stupid, in retrospect) show that harpies steal food, so I theorized that Ma & Pa Apple would've caught one raiding their orchard and tried to stop her, only to get killed for their efforts.
