Here we go with the last main character. This is the donkey that the story
begins with. In the old folk tale, each animal joins up because they no
longer fit in and are estranged from their homes as obsolete, outcast, etc.
And I'm thinking this is particularly true for the donkey. Perhaps he worked
a dead-end job, was laid off, rents a room in a home that is then foreclosed
upon, and so he has no resources and no ties. Something like that: that
kind of tragic slipping over the economic cliff that most people are only a
paycheck away from.
I agree with most of you about the appropriateness of Evelyn as the modern
electric bass over the old upright acoustic. However, I do like the spirit of the
larger instrument, and figure it could still feature at the beginning of the tale
before being destroyed - a galvanizing event that motivates him to seek a
new life, or at least leave the old one.
I should mention that I don't particularly see him as a talented player at
all. He probably has the least musical aptitude in the band. Warren
has a manic knack for banging on things, Miah is a campfire hobbyist
with her acoutstic guitar, and Gerik has actual professional singing
experience. And so each member of the band is increasingly more
talented, adding more to the sound. But it starts with dude here who can't
really play a lick. He just has a dream to follow, primarily because there is
nothing else in his life. By the end of the narrative, of course, with enough
practice and all, everybody gels together as a band more or less just fine :)
You'll note that the differences in the image aren't as extreme perhaps as
for some of the other characters. Mostly subtle, little things. The most
important, I suppose being the hoof/foot issue. The middle figure has the
vaguely stylized swayback of equine legs and hooves, but I don't want to
make a big deal about it. I really would be just as happy with a clunky boots
solution.
I know that I have my own particular ideas about donkey characters, but I'm
going to try to let those go; this isn't a Mary Sue character and he doesn't
have to look like any of the other donkeys I draw or characters I've
identified with in the past.
One option that might be interesting is to make him a Poitou donkey.
Those that are bred for shaggy hair that forms dreds all over their body.
The only hesitation I have is that they are particularly French and there is a
thin German veneer to this whole thing so far, and more that I plan to
develop in the setting. That might be a cool character feature, or it
could just be trying too hard for uniqueness.
I also am considering putting him into overalls, but that would be more
obvious with the coloring stage, and will be an option then, regardless of the
body type decision at this point.
SPECIFIC FEEDBACK PLOX. And as usual, please keep in mind that the attributes shown can mix and match freely!

Okay, I like them all but I can't help wanting to mix and match. =D I like the muzzle and ears of the 1st, with the beefier arms and feet of the 2nd. The 3rd is a close 2nd for me as I like his build and tummy and his ears are way cute. =) Can I have one of each please? =)
love the body type of the middle guy, but maybe just give him the big curb stompy boots of the far right guy. I can see him having upwards ears, instead of down (will always remind me of the donkey from winnie the pooh, not a bad thing of course. just gives off a more dopey look) and he wants to follow a dream I can see him being at least a little perky, and those ears might convey that. mane hair is cute <3
Heh, if you go with the poitou idea, those body dreds I'm quite sure would get in the way of his playing, flipping and brushing against the strings and the like.
I say go with worn boots on their last legs (hawhaw) and a skinnier frame if he's in sure economic dire straights upon joining the band.

things i like:
- CHUNKY boots. i like banrai's suggestion of making them steel toe.
- larger build
- bull nose
- floppy ears
- depending on his age, either a prominent mane (young) or a receding/downplayed hairline with understated mane (older).
BUILD ME THE PERFECT ASS.
... YOU HEARD ME.

I'd say the first one.
Something strikes me about this character is that, in true donkey fashion, he is quite stubborn.
Life has punched him repeatedly in the balls, but he's flipping life the bird in defiance of past experience, everything he knows, and his own lack of ability in order to stubbornly pursue his dream.
I find that admirable.
The first figure has his ears facing forward, showing eagerness, and his chin jutted forward, indicating both grit and determination. His hair is cut short, indicating someone who doesn't have time to bother with it.
The second figure looks more like a typical slacker. His posture ears and features all show a guy who just doesn't care anymore. And I'll admit, he looks more like someone completely at the end of his rope, who would join a band because he honestly had nothing better to do.
But not one who would practice hard to follow his dream.
The third figure looks like someone who was, yes, repeatedly kicked in the balls by life and circumstance. He seems to slouch while standing as straight as the other two, like he's just patiently waiting for the next kick. I could believe that someone like that would never expect anything better, or more than what he has.
But he doesn't look like a guy who would hope for more.
Sorry to ramble on and assume so much, but I really do hope you pick figure one.
He seems like a guy who's store I'd wanna hear.

I would like the idea of him being doughy without looking well-fed; weasle-y about the limbs, and a gut. I favor the shape and aesthetics of hooves, but if everyone has flat feet in this world, he should have -some- manner of toes, says my rigidly scientific brain. Small, scruffy chin... not sure what to say about the ears... mostly because it seems like maybe you can merely establish that they are stiff, and use the angle for expression?
I really like the middle one the best; the first one doesn't really seem to reflect much of the description; it doesn't seem particularly downtrodden; the last one appears more befitting to someone that's already given up on life and wouldn't bother much with trying anything else.
I think the model on the right fits the spirit/description of the character, in specific, and it's also, in my opinion, the best-looking of the styles, at least for this particular piece. I think the humanoid feet work best -- because, if I recall, the rest of the characters have those, too!
That face/head also seems the most, well, welcoming -- I don't know if that's what you want, but the first looks like it'd be perpetually sneering, or simply vacant/dopey/goofy. The mane style on that one looks pretty perfect, though.
All in all, it also seems like the bulgier, but not-Popeye-style arms are the best - much like you drew them in the third model, and I think it has the best ears, too.

I've always felt that thin, lanky bodies work well with bassists. It's always just looked so pleasing to me. However, I rather enjoy the popeye proportions. I hadn't even considered that!
I really dislike the upturned nose. I'm not sure why, but I just really dislike it. The moment I saw it, I was like, "ehhhh."
I enjoy the hair-mane thing going on with the second quite a bit.
The floppy ears just feel odd to me. I'd say go with either the upright or back ears.
I agree with you about the Poitou maybe seeming a bit like trying too hard for a unique character. It looks neat, but it really doesn't feel like it fits with the rest of the characters.
As someone mentioned above, the third does seem to fit the description well. When I think of thin, lanky bassists, I generally think of good bassists (though I've a friend who's rather pudgy and quite good at slappin' de bass), so a pudgy, doughy guy kind of fits with my idea of a not-so-good bassist.

Ears back, definitely not floppy.
Mane spiked up but not cut. Possibly bleached a la peroxide. Something other than a dark color. (Think fauxhawk)
I'm leaning toward the bull nose, just broader. Upturned is too porcine for me. I think you can still get that great equine lower lip pout with a more realistic muzzle.
Broader chin as with the rest of the muzzle.
Leaner body type but I still picture that bassist slouch, and if you get the pants to look like something other than slim fit I think it'll work better.
I'm way into hooves for equines, but for consistency's sake you've got boots/shoes on everyone else, so I'd put shoes on the guy. Timberlands or something.
Left or middle for me. I still like the right as a concept but I think you've got a leaner, meaner, hungrier band started here, so the left and mid seem to have attributes that fit that better.
I'm looking forward to seeing the fleshed out design!

I get it :) thanks! You are echoing some other sentiments I'm seeing.
And I'm thinking just now as type, that perhaps, as we follow this particular character the longest, that perhaps he starts to the right and develops more into the left. Being on the road and such. Other folks have mentioned things that make this seem like a useful visual to track. Particularly as he starts of kind of aimless in all other aspects of life except for the one goal/fantasy of being a musician. Begining as doughy and then shaping up. Particularly when meeting up with the dog, who is waghappy and always moving getting him out of sluggish mode, then meeting up with the cat who actually begins to teach him how to play, and finally the rooster who teaches him about his attitude and outward charisma (time to bleach that hair!)
VERY USEFUL COMMENT

Yes! This is what I was thinking as I was reading the comments and looking at the different ones. He can have aspects of all three as he develops. Starting out pudgy and thinning out as well as changing his overall expression and how he holds his ears and posture.
As far as form though, I really like the strength and stubborn feel of the first's head with the bull nose, hooves and popeye arms of the second, and then he starts doughy like the third.

I rather like the doughy body type, it looks like a better complement to the body types of the other band members, though if you want them all looking kinda lean and 'grungy' the middle one is great. I think either the upright or the backturned ears look good, and the bull nose looks better to me.
I'm also leaning toward the third, and my initial thought was how his figure would contrast with the rest of the band. After reading your description it seemed even more perfect.
I see him not so much as skinny starving artist bohemian type, this is a working guy, a mule. Sure, he twiddled on the axe a bit as a hobby, but mostly he lived to work, cause that's basically all he knew. He worked, paid rent, and enjoyed the little things (like food) that his regular paycheck permitted him to.
He's the everyman, in a sense, who gets his world shattered and decides to roll with it and start a band!
at least, that's what popped into my head!

He may have the least musical talent. Nevertheless (in the fairytale) the donkey is the one who started it all, brought the others together one by one and was the "grey eminence". My personal understanding is that every group, band or whatever only survives if there is a spirit that keeps the strong characters together and has the right feeling to give them direction.
So - even though the donkey may have the smallest musical talent of them all he still may have one of the most profund roles (or... maybe it is just me profecting too much into this role)

Hmm, let me see...
I would build my donkey from the following parts:
- lean/trim build, yet with the Popeye arms; he's been a working man of some sort, maybe at a big warehouse or at a port, before he got laid off.
- clunky work boots suggestive of hooves, for the same reason.
- floppy ears - bent but not broken, a little bit beaten, yet still trying to "perk up".
No real preferences re: the face shape or the mane.

Oh man. The story part there is really touching. Especially because um, the economic thing. I've been there, I am there.
I like all of the head designs, but I am inclined to go with the slender look - because you've used Popeye proportions on other donkeys, and because I figured the character was supposed to be in his 20s. But if you're going for a back story where he was a mill worker or middle management who just snapped after getting laid off, then he'd be in his 30s and heavier, no?

From the neck up I like the second, but I would prefer the third body. Just seems like someone in the band should have the crazy hair. :D
Regarding the toes/hooves issue, I've always felt it strange to give equines hooved feet without digitigrade legs to match, the balance just seems really odd. So I guess I'd vote clunky boots, ahaha, maybe metal toes-- they've got to get in the jokes about kicking people in, right?

Just a thought to add?
I remember you were taking votes/opinions for the guitar itself. I see this a lot in my hobbies, where a lack of skill is often compensated for by buying the nicest gear and hoping you can hide behind it. Either by flash or by craftsmanship, if you get what I mean?
I can't tell you how many guys buy the nicest clothing, the most expensive gear, and still can't show me any skill to back it up. To be fair, some like the cool gear, but too many just hide their lack of ability behind it.

I believe that the last one seems to accomodate him best. He strikes me as the type of character whose visual appearance reluctantly falls into a stereotype he does not want. Of course none of these designs could be called "idealistic" in terms of beauty, but that last one in particular seems more like the type of guy you would look at and immediately come to some conclusions. Something about his size and shape make me think that he has dreams that no one cares about, which is the vibe I got from the description.
Never seen a Poitou donkey before, cuteness! Hmm...he could be half-German: everything above or below the waist could be shaggy, i.e., French! I'm going to go with #2. Since the animals were all misfits in the original fable, the larger than normal forearms, weird hooves and raggedy looking ears would definitely accentuate "not fitting in" or looking "useful". After all, Miah has those wrinkles and Gerik is constantly moulting. Yup, #2 it is!!!
i would say the middle one, he has alot of character to him, especially the flopped over ear and not all bassists are fat. It's usually the older ones that are and that's years and years after. I think the middle one is best, always tough looks a bit rough around the edges and his hooves are a yes!
I definitely prefer him starting as a chub, and maybe leaning out as you suggested earlier. The backstory sounds like a guy who's prolly living off the nearest fast food place, too lazy/ intimidated to cook his own meals. Then he comes home tired, and maybe picks up his bass, maybe vegs out on the computer, either way he's not burning calories, but he's sure taking'em in with each meal.
As others have said, having hooves when everyone else has feet just seems inappropriate. Plus then he'd hafta have some equivalent on his hands, like extra thick dark nails.
I'm in favor of the mane being something that can be styled like hair, but is still very mane-like, and prolly fairly ignored when he starts out.
As for things I don't really have a good supporting reason for, I like the stif ears, whether they go back or forward. Guess the flop feels too cutesy.
And the upturned nose and thin chin seem more brutish and less attractive. Whether that's a good or bad thing I couldn't say.

I kinda tried to build him in my head a bit as I saw what you had already thought up and glanced over what your ideas for him already are. In my head i keep coming back to this scrawny brown jack with lighter brown patches much like an Anatolia's markings, a bull nose and low-hung ears. By low hung i mean held low in a sort of 'worn down but not broken quite yet' feel to them. If he's kind of living a 'mules life' working hard and not getting anywhere, about to slip off that cliff of the economic downfall, I'd think he'd have this slowed down and slightly blue feel to him, but an underlying peace that makes you feel 'it's shitty right now, but that's just fine, I'll keep going'
I definitely cast my vote for hooves, maybe make them kinda cracked up and chipping, like those of a donkey who's been walking a long long time down a hard life's road, that and hoofies are so cute :3
