ARPG Breeding for Zoo ARPG
Field Notes
Plans initially called to only breed our Barbary females with Sefu, our dark Barbary male who displayed characteristics truest to the breed. Hopes were to start a breeding program to produce offspring that can later be released back into the wild to bring the species back into their native environment. Unfortunately complications rose immediately as our two females became overly stressed and panicked when separated from the rest of their pride. Even if breeding were successful, the stress inflicted on the females could result in other health complications.
Further complications surfaced when attempting to artificially impregnate the homotherium female. Being of a reconstructed species, no suitable living males could be located at a reasonable expense, so it was decided to use further reconstructed DNA samples to artificially impregnate her. Unfortunately with many species of big cats, breeding is more complicated then that. To be receptive to reproduce, the female must first be brought into heat.
It was eventually decided to introduce our homotherium female with the lioness pride before slowly introducing our Barbary male into the pride. Having a strong, healthy pride of females eases the stress for all it's member. Our pride queen Zaire is especially important as her presence alone helps establish order and keeps down any scuffles that might arise when the male is introduced. The presence of the Barbary male also helps to bring all the females into heat. To avoid crossbreeding, we've added the Asiatic lioness to the artificial insemination planning.
Once the season has passed and all females have taken to their prospective program, our male will be removed and returned back to the Kings exhibit.
