The night had long sense settled, the stars coming out to shine like crystals through the still cloudless sky. Brenin had settled the small herd on the outskirts of a forest, a quiet area that seemed adequately sheltered while keeping some distance from too thick of cover. Lune and Barbossa were already sound asleep, curled up together in a fuzzy mass of snoring fur. Perle and General seemed to be settling into the group nicely, both opting to chat with each other before the new mare starts to drift to slumber. Brenin pawed tensely at the ground as he watched his herd from a distance, his brow furrowed in contemplation. Eventually a light touch on his shoulder roused him from his whirl wind of thoughts with an almost start. Zonta gave an almost apologetic smile as Brenin turned to stare at her.
"Do you... want to take a walk with me?" Her voice seemed to almost trembled with nerves or maybe the faint chill of the night air, Brenin wasn't too sure.
Nodding, Brenin was almost sure he saw a faint brightness spread across Zonta's face as she smiled. He let her lead, following her just a step behind as they gradually moved through the canopy of the forest. Between the soft drumming of their slow hoof beats and the occasional sound of the night around them, the world was almost silent as the pair strolled. Brenin could feel that faint itching tenseness gradually return as the let his thoughts drip over his mind.
She had always been so quiet. Never voicing complaint. Never asking for anything. He hid a faint snort, masking it as a sneeze as he cursed to himself. Why hadn't I noticed? How can I be her lead if she wont tell me what she wants-
Blinking, an almost wave of realization finally washed over him. Lifting his head high, Brenin's eyes kept on the mare before him as he gave a soft sniff. The scent was faint, like the fragrance of flower field miles away, but it was there. The tension in his muscles gave a faint jolt.
She had asked to take a walk... Away from the others... She had actually asked something of me...
Pausing in his steps, Brenin eyed the mare walking before him. She had been the first mare to join him in his travels. She had tried so hard to do good for him. Still he couldn't help but wonder if he could really claim she was HIS mare. Watching her move before him in the soft ebbing moonlight sent an almost painful warmth through his chest.
Maybe tonight... I can claim her as mine.
Taking a deep breathe, a faint nervous shake creep into the young stallion's voice as it slowly rose through the night air. The sound stopping the mare into frozen awe.
