Okay, this movie was more moving and morally conflicting than it had any right to be. I will describe what’s happening here, but there will be spoilers, so viewer discretion is advised.
So, Mordecai and Rigby went to high school together, and it is a time travel story, so their present day selves end up going to their high school days to destroy a time machine they were working on with their science teacher/ volleyball coach who turns out to be an insane psychopath that later on shows how little he cares about creation when he tries to erase all of time itself just because Rigby interrupted his volleyball game. Long story short, the two in high school wanted to go to a college that claims is for everyone, but it turns out, Rigby didn’t get in, and the rejection letter he got was pretty damn soul crushing too. He’s had a hard life with unsupportive parents, and just being treated like crap in general, and the only thing he had going for him was his best friend Mordecai. He didn’t want to lose him. So Rigby went over to Mordecai’s house and made a terrible decision out of desperation. He was going to steal Mordecai’s acceptance letter, and replace it with a fake rejection letter so he wouldn’t leave him. By the time Rigby’s lie caught up to him, because that teacher forced Rigby to read the actual letter he got (I could clearly hear his depression so clearly when reading it) Mordecai was PISSED, and had every right to be. And deep down, I’m pretty sure Rigby knew that too. It follows with them breaking up their friendship and Rigby planning to kill himself (Yes, that happened.) and after ending up with Father Time, he knew he had to make up for the mess he started by saving the universe from being erased. Yes, it’s heavy shit. I know. And to be honest, seeing people going straight for “Fuck that piece of shit” only just makes my anxiety and depression go haywire for whatever reason. I guess when I get so attached to someone, any knock at them becomes a knock at me.
This was too moving for me not to draw, and I salute the fact they were daring enough to go in that direction.
