Franz found it difficult to answer, like something was lodged firmly in his throat. He had experienced the process of death and rebirth so often his memory had corroded. For once in a very long time, he felt shame. It too, was oddly familiar.
- “I’m not sure.” he said. “I can’t give you a precise answer.”
- “But why? Why would you forsake yourself like that?”
He looked down at the skies in shame.
- “I reckon I have a good reason for doing that. Funny. I can’t remember my reasoning or if there was any reasoning to begin with. Maybe I wasn’t entirely happy with my existence, maybe I was forced into doing it. Or maybe I wanted to get something less or more, make myself feel good or punish myself. But whatever the case is, whatever happened, it’s all moot now. The past is uh…it’s dead.”
The woman frowns.
- “It’s not. You tried to run away. You were too scared so you tried to run away and built yourself a lie to protect yourself from the trauma. Such a…mortal thing to do.”
- “What was I afraid of?”
The woman lets out a defeated sigh and looks at the sky above.
- “Of everything.”
There’s a silence between them. They look at each other as if waiting for the other to speak, to give a sign, to muster the courage to keep going. Franz closed his eyes, took a deep breath and began:
- “I don’t think anybody could’ve predicted things to have ended this way. But I guess we’ve been numbed by it.”
- “That you have.”
- “The only thing I want right now. What I really, genuinely desire right now, is to know YOU. Who are you? What’re you doing here? Why do you look so familiar?”
- “You…you really have forgotten yourself.”
She reaches her hand out to him. The rays of the sun are warm and welcoming. He reaches out to hold it, imagining the silken quality, the warm flesh, the feeling of being close to pure creature. Just a little bit closer.
His fingers pass through her hand.
