New armor concept for my protagonist.
Charge armor is widely distributed among the Watch, and frequently purchased by anyone important enough to have both enemies and sense enough to seek affordable means of self-preservation. A layer of smart fluid, sandwiched between a durable outer layer and inner padding, remains flexible until any foreign metal object moves through the armor's electromagnetic field at a particular velocity. At that point, the smart fluid layer hardens and absorbs any impact. The byproduct, heat, is dissipated by heat-sinks or other thermal dissipation devices attached to the suit.
Of course, nonstandard weaponry such as plastic shivs or hardened graphite projectiles easily defeat this defensive measure. Such objects are understandably contraband. Violators are often dealt with to an excessive measure, and district supervisors tend to look the other way.
