More non-furry content. An update of an old story;
Cut off in the Roncevailles System, with all transmissions to Aix jammed by the Paynim, Roland and his few power-armored Carolingians fought a desperate but inevitably doomed rear-guard action. Towards the end of the battle, Roland attempted to sabotage his powerful plasma blade to keep it from falling into enemy hands; Durendal, said to have been forged on the mythical homeworld of Terra centuries before. Instead, the sheer power in the weapon overloaded the ship's fusion reactor core and prompted an emergency shut-down.

Count Roland smites upon the marble stone;
I cannot tell you how he hewed it and smote;
Yet the blade breaks not nor splinters, though it groans;
Upward to heaven it rebounds from the blow.
When the count sees it never will be broke,
Then to himself right softly he makes moan;
'Ah, Durendal, fair, hallowed, and devote,
What store of relics lies in thy hilt of gold!'
