Fall, 1332
It was early the next morning when the celebrations finally died down in the charred ruins of the Imperial Capital. Walking along the ruins of Coronation Street, Logan came upon Meratezatgh, surrounded by drunken carousing soldiers-some atop him even- drinking and carousing with them, an open barrel in hand. Mera was singing in Draconic, which Logan had never heard before, a low, echoing bellow that changed to chirps and whistles. The haunting sound reverberated down the street, filled with drunken and sleeping revelers. No one seemed to mind, or even really notice.
“Mera. There you are.” The Forester said.
The dragon had enough presence of mind to nod, gently brushing off his drinking companions from atop him with his snout and gesture for them to leave. With an officer in front of them and their reptilian comrade behind them, the humans quickly sobered up, and awkwardly nodding and bowing, went off to party elsewhere, leaving Mera and Logan alone.
The dragon got to his feet, grinning like an idiot.
“I can’t believe none of you guys ever introduced me to pilsner.” Mera said, taking a swig from the barrel. “Drink of the Heavens. Neither Lord Haight, nor you have ever let me try this. I wonder why?”
“Alcohol is expensive, Mera. And I think we all worry what would have happened with a large drunk dragon.”
The great wyrm laughed.
“Perhaps you all are right. But anyways I love this shit. Need to find more of it around.”
Suddenly the dragon stopped, put down his barrel of beer, and walked over to Logan, looming over the Forester. His face turned completely serious.
“By the way, there is one more thing that needs to be resolved.”
Logan stiffened up as the Mera put his left forearm on the Forester’s shoulder.
“I, Meratezatgh, Lord of the Southern Ranges, hereby consecrate you, Logan Durham, the Forester of Stanton, Krhesmank, a dragon friend.”
The dragon sat back down upon his haunches.
“Now show me your palms.”
Logan did as he was told, and Mera pulled something out from behind one of his horns. The dragon then solemnly lowered a claw, upon which dangled a familiar old necklace with a little yellow stone shining luminously on the end.
“Please take this back.” The wyrm stated quietly, before his voice dropped even lower, barely being above a whisper. “It means everything to me.”
Reverently the Dragoneye was handed back to the Forester. After a brief pause, the Forester accepted it in his hands.
The great wyrm smiled, a genuine, warm, beaming grin, and then leaned over and gently rested his snout on Logan's shoulder.
“May you always be a friend to me, Logan Durham.”
Logan smiled as well and wrapped his arms around the ground's snout. “I thank you, Meratezatgh, Lord of the Southern Ranges.”
The two old companions hugged, and for that moment at least, despite all the chaos and suffering and struggle that remained to be resolved, it was as if the world had begun righting itself.
