20 years ago, as of 2021, we got the following consoles:
•Microsoft Xbox and its awesome games, for instance, Dead or Alive 3 (fighting), Halo: Combat Evolved (first-person shooter), Project Gotham Racing (racing), etc. It had incredibly powerful 733 MHz "Coppermine-based" Intel Pentium III (custom) CPU (contrast PS2's 299 MHz Emotion Engine CPU (Slim) and GameCube's 486 MHz PowerPC CPU), a 64 MB of unified RAM, an impressive for its time 233 MHz GPU, an HDD support that allowed to play custom songs in, for example, Project Gotham Racing. Very powerful game console of the 6th generation. The original controller nicknamed "Duke" was fat, pain to carry, which complaints led to Microsoft redesigning it, much to players' pleasure. Its use of PC-based disc reader and HDD contributed much to its bulk, size and weight.
•Nintendo GameCube. The console's most prominent launch titles are Luigi's Mansion, the Nintendo's light-hearted, family-friendly horror experience, and Super Smash Bros. Melee, the console's #1 bestselling crossover fighting game. The console's IBM PowerPC CPU was clocked at 486 MHz, GPU: 162 MHz, RAM: 43 MB total non-unified, media: small mini-DVDs designed by Nintendo themselves. They weren't happy with PS2/Xbox discs' copy protection systems, so they designed these discs. Unfortunately, the maximum storage size was ~1.3 gigabytes, which threw many devs away or forced to compress something to fit the size. Its controller looked weird, but was fun to use. Just like Xbox, it had 4 controller slots, which benefited for 4-player family-friendly fun!
•Nintendo Game Boy Advance. It was backwards compatible with all original, 8-bit Game Boy and equally 8-bit, but colorful Game Boy Color games, and its notable launch titles included, for example, Advance Wars, Golden Sun, Mario Kart Super Circuit, and Wario Land 4. There were two CPUs, one is ARM7TDMI @ 16.78 MHz, one is 8080-descented Sharp LR35902 @ 8.388 or 4.194 MHz. Very fun portable console, isn't it? Any innovations, because Nintendo is like "go innovate or die trying" when it comes with console design, sir?
What do you also remember which was released in 2001?
