I know, but that's a bit high for a starting bid, especially when offering to a fandom where the majority do not have jobs and live off of commissions/mom/other income. I know the price range, but for a suit that's already made and is trying to be sold, I'd say a starting bid below $1000 would be more acceptable, because it'd probably go over $1000 once people actually start bidding on it.
that's because they start with a "reserve" -- this is a bid price that is set lower to attract bidders but the auction does not end with a winner unless the reserve is met. the bids start at $100 but the reserve price is usually around $1600-$1800, and the seller is under no obligation to complete the transaction if the highest bid at auction ending does not meet the reserve.
i listed this auction at $200 with a $1200 reserve last time i tried to sell it, this time i lowered the price and eliminated the reserve. many furries/bidders do not understand reserve prices and look at my price and consider it "too high" as they think that we'll actually sell a costume for $100 :/ ...

this is my full time job. :) thanks for your input.

by the way, most of who i have sold costumes to in the past are working adult professionals :) there is no "more acceptable" here -- the neat thing about auctions is that the buyer determines the item's worth. if nobody bids, maybe next time then! tons of costumes up for sale right now, and tons of competition. :)
This is the most ridiculous comment I've seen yet. The majority of furries I've met not only have jobs, but quite high paying ones that afford them the luxury of buying something like this (and they do). The starting price is fine, if people are so daft that they think it would actually sell for 100-500 brand new, they probably don't even have that as disposable income anyway.
Considering the many journals I see a day of people asking for money, I'd say it's not entirely ridiculous. But it's not just because of jobless furries, it's the recession as well. And I know a suit like that wouldn't sell at that price range. I'd say at the very least $800 to start, but that's only my opinion. I wasn't really basing it off the costumer's worth, more over that it'd be more attractive to the eye. Just like how retail stores use prices like $1.99 instead of $2.00.
What do you mean, a "suit like that"?
A brand new never worn suit with optional tailoring by an established builder shouldnt/wouldnt sell for that much?
What that comment tells me is not what it should sell for, but rather what you can afford.
Also: journals on fa aren't the real world. Most furries have jobs :)

"A suit like that"? Jill's work is exceptional quality. Reading over your comments, I understand your logic about making the starting bid lower, but would you rather bid and be disappointed you didn't bid enough and not get the item or know straight up what you are going to pay?
Above all else, it's totally fine that you are not interested. But why even comment? If you see that it out of your price range, ignore it and move along. :/

My theory: I have a suspicion that people are watching the auction, waiting until the last few hours to start bidding up because the price has started so close to the range it'll actually sell in. The benefit of starting at a lower price to begin with is more psychological than anything else; the threshold for people to start biting at the auction is lower, so you get more early bidders and people start getting entrenched and are more willing to engage in a bidding war over it. Bidding that starts late doesn't seem to progress as far. Making it seem affordable is completely beside the point; starting lower, even with a higher reserve, is just a tactic to generate an early swell.
If you'd rather have an anti-tosser field erected around the auction to ensure that you get serious bids only, starting high will do that. It just may bloom late, and possibly not as much.

right ... last time around i did list with a low start price and set my current start price as the reserve, which did generate interest, but it also resulted in the 'winning' bidder figuring he could buy the costume for over $500 under the reserve price as it didn't even meet the reserve. reserves are generally misunderstood and i don't think there's enough interest in my work to merit working with them :)
so, you have my intentions correct, and if it doesn't sell again, /shrug
all i can do is try :)

Yeah, although it'd be a damn shame if he doesn't get adopted this round. That is a really cute suit. :/
In my INFINITE WISDOM (and my armchair) I would've suggested putting the starter at...not super-low, but somewhere in the 900's or so (or a few hundred below reserve, wherever you set the reserve) for maybe a bit of both effects; I think the extra digit may have a bigger psychological impact than it should.

yeah, unfortunately there really isn't enough desire for my work for me to feel confident on starting the bids that low -- this is a project in which the profit has to be split between two persons as well, so it's not fair to shortchange my work partner if it doesn't go as high as we'd like. :/ i'm not a "big name" so it's a little harder to sell my work this way :D live n learn!
